Dodgers Stadium Quilt – 2006

After reading over the meta-data from both the 2004 & 2006 datasets of the Los Angeles orthoimagery, I discovered that the 2006 imagery is scanned from printed photographs taken in 2001! That is, the photography was taken 2001 by the USGS, printed out, then scanned (at 1700 DPI) & processed in 2006 by AirPhotoUSA, and then released into the public domain. I could be wrong, but that is my analysis of the meta-data. I assume this was done because the inferior quality of the 2004 imagery in regards to the shadows. Lastly, when looking at the Google Map of the stadium (which uses the same imagery as this map), they incorrectly state that the imagery is copyrighted to Sanborn.

Dodgers Stadium Quilt – 2004

I made two tessellations of the Los Angeles Dodgers stadium. One from the 2004 imagery and one from the 2006 imagery. Of note is that Google Maps is currently using the 2006 imagery (it looks like the seats had been taken out of the stadium and were placed in the parking lot). The problem with the 2004 dataset of LA is that the flyover was done in the afternoon and the shadows obscure much of the ground. The best example of this is Los Angeles Quilt, which shows downtown but with too many shadows.

University of Southern California Quilt #2

Read my brief comments about USC in my previous entry.
Of note, is that after posting the last map I looked at the number of maps I’ve made of Los Angeles and realized that I have enough for a 2008 Calendar! I will definitely put one together in time for this Christmas season. And after even further review, I actually have enough maps for a series of different calendars- DC, California, Texas, various universities, and fractals. :-)

University of Southern California Quilt

These two maps of the University of Southern California will be the last of Los Angeles for a bit. I am surprised by the amount of maps I have made of this sprawling city! Moreover, I see myself remapping much of the city in the not-so-distant future. There is a lot of places here left to discover. As for USC, I think it’s quite interesting how condensed the University Park Campus is. I thought GWU’s urban location was slighly cramped, but this university was able to fit a lot into a small area.

Park Circle Quilt – Interactive
I took the 9,000 x 6,000 version (one half the original) of Park Circle Quilt reduced it in size one half (to 4,500 x 3,000), then doubled the width by copying the quilt (final dimensions: 9,000 x 3,000). Using the program Make Cubic I made a Quicktime Virtual Reality environment of the location. It’s about 20 megabytes so be patient while it downloads.

Park Circle Quilt

Like Dupont Circle, Grant Circle, Park La Brea, and Ladd’s Addition, I’ve used another street circle for a map. I really like making these maps too. I’ve found that some of the coolest maps are the ones that have their own geometry that I am able to exploit. After scouring Los Angeles the other day I stumbled upon this small plot of land in Inglewood that has a small circle (Park Circle) with 5 streets radiating from it and decided it was good enough to remake. Similar to Dupont Circle Quilt #2, the two circles combine to create an added effect that I find interesting.
If you know of locations that have a circle and are in a large city in America (and not DC), please send me info about the location!

over-projection after three derivatives

I decided to compare the unmodified imagery of Oakland’s City Hall Plaza with the same location after 3 derivative maps (specifically a detail from Oakland Quilt #5). The result is quite interesting because it shows that the template I’ve been using for almost a year is not 100% perfect, which I knew already, but never cared to quantatively find out.
First there is too much light because the imagery on the right is slightly brighter. I did not compare the RGB histograms to see exactly how bright it is, but will check out in the future. Secondly, and more importantly, the template ever-so-slightly over-projects the imagery. The visual result is a slightly fuzzy version of the original, which, in most cases, does not matter because it’s ONLY noticable when shown at it’s full size. Once the map is reduced in size the fuzziness goes away.
To discover this I placed the original imagery on top of the used imagery and changed the opacity so that I could line up park on top each other and to match them I had to stretch the original imagery about .03%. Which after being used for 3 maps, this means my current template over-projects the imagery approximately .01%. This isn’t all the bad, but it means I need to do a slight resize to the template. Technically this means each map is 180 pixels too large, but honestly, I find that number a bit too high….

This map is also a hexagon quilt projection map like the first. The difference is that I used the other tessellation and I rotated it 90 degrees.

Oakland Quilt

I decided to try to see how many maps I could make in one day. In the past when I made multiple maps of a specific geography I would post one each subsequent day, however I am now able to make maps a bit more quickly now, so I am going post the 4 I made yesterday/last night. Originally I made two different tessellatons of city center in Oakland, California. This map is the only on that features the first tessellation, and is the only map to use it.
