Adams Morgan Quilt 2005
Its been a couple years since I made a map of the Adams Morgan neighborhood in Washington, DC [wiki]. The first quilt of Adams Morgan deviated from my normal practice at the time because I modified the colors in the source imagery and the second quilt was a completely experimental map (which I have yet to revisit).
This time around I decided to go all out and make a whole series of Adams Morgan quilts using 8 different tessellations to create 8 unique maps of the area. The result shows that even when the exact same source imagery is used in each map, the nature of the tessellation creates a completely new design for the area.
Similar to the 4 maps I created for U Street in 2005, where the tessellations were labeled Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, and Southeast, the tessellations for the Adams Morgan quilts use these same tiling methods, but also include the 90 degree rotation for each tile, to create a total 8 different tessellations.
Unlike the U Street Series which only featured the Dodecagon Quilt Projection, this series features 2 Hexagons, 2 Squares, 2 Diamonds, and 2 Octagons, making a great example of the types of geometry found in the Quilt Projection.
One of the reasons why I decided to make the series for Adams Morgan (of all places in DC) was that I figured that a lot of people enjoy going to and living in Adams Morgan and thus people would be interested in possibly obtaining one or more of these maps. I also was under the impression that I was going to beat Google to the map, which would make these maps slightly more unique because people would be looking at future (assuming that Google would eventually update their servers with this same imagery).
However as I started to snoop around in Google Maps I found that they had already updated their servers for much of the DC area. Moreover, there was a lot more to their update that had been covered by any bloggers or in the media. I am going to be saving this analysis for an upcoming entry because I think it’s quite interesting and even newsworthy.

Adams Morgan Mandala
I like this rendering, but the way I setup the lighting is not the way I wanted it to look. Its far to bleached out at the center… and well, I’ve never like the colors in this imagery in the first place. The reason why this took place is because I saved the file after making the last mandala rendering, the Buena Park Mandala…

Adams Morgan Lenz
The last rendering I made for the Lenz Project was back on July 22nd, so I figured that it was about time to make another. I definitely like the way it turned out because I rotated the central plane at a 45 degree angle and it made the intersection of 18th & Columbia more pronounced.
I was going to make a second version by using the “inverse” of the source imagery, but my Mac’s internet connection (via it’s 25ft ethernet cable) was screwed up and I had to restart the computer (in hindsight, I realized I didn’t need to reboot grrr). I did save how I wanted make version two, so I might make it this weekend…..

Adams Morgan - White House Quilt

Sucks… I like the template, but I don’t like the way this came out. The Adams Morgan aerial photography looks a bit bleached out compared to the White House imagery. Yet what is important about this rendering is that I used two different types of spatial resolutions and I used two different types of objects. The White House imagery is mapped on to 4 rotated infinite planes (object one) and on the Adams Morgan imagery is mapped on about 40 pyramids grouped and rotated in a circle (object 2). The first time I used the White House pattern like that was with DC Lenz #4, and this is only the second rendering I’ve used the Adams Morganimagery in. I don’t think I’ll be using them together again.

Adams Morgan Quilt
Finally a rendering for one of my favorite parts of DC, Adams Morgan! I actually prepared two different versions of the modified imagery. My original plan was to make two exact versions of eachother, with the only difference being how the source imagery was modified. Essentially, when I prepare the imagery I can place source image in one of 4 places (upper right / left, lower right / left) of the canvas and then reflect imagery around the placement. Usually I choose some geographic identifier to be placed at the center, so when reflected it’s noticed more.
In the rendering above I chose to place the Duke Ellington bridge at the center. Yet when I imported the “inverse,” I noticed that the colors were a bit brighter, which can only mean that adjusted the levels a bit too much on the inverse for it to truly be an inverted version of the original. Regardless, this one I came out fabulous!
Up next, Georgetown Quilt #3, this time I am reflecting it more and I’ve modified the source imagery a bit so there isn’t any abstraction of the imagery…basically, what I’ve found out that in the tessellation process, if I use a rectangle the imagery is stretched to compensate. However, if I use perfectly square imagery, there isn’t any stretch and the fidelity of the source imagery is maintained.
I’m definitely going to make a few Adams Morgan prints in the next week or so. I also want to make some of Anacostia and Columbia Heights, and maybe, just maybe one of Foggy Bottom…
