Vassar Quilt Refraction

Vassar Quilt Refraction

Using this portion of Vassar Quilt #2, I made this derivative map of Vassar College using added elements from the Lenz projection. The optics create a very unique sense of depth at the center of the map. I also added four other optical elements that create a fluvial design, almost appearing to flow toward the center.

Vassar Quilt #2

Using this portion of Vassar Quilt, I made this derivative map of Vassar College. For more information about this imagery see my previous posting or read the metadata. There will be a third map in this series that is vastly different than the previous two. It should be on-line shortly.

Vassar Quilt

Continuing my ongoing project of mapping various colleges, schools, and universities around the United States, I decided to follow-up Mount Holyoke College with Vassar College. According to the metadata, the aerial photography was taken in 2004, scanned at 1 foot per pixel in early 2006, and released to the public in December, 2006. I have prepared another tessellation for Vassar and will make a derivative follow-up map.

Mount Holyoke Quilt

: rendered at 18,000 X 12,000 :
Mount Holyoke Quilt

Located in South Hadley, Massachusetts, Mount Holyoke College is the first all woman’s school in the United States of America. Founded by Mary Lyon as Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, it’s served as a model for how most all women’s schools were formed. I visited the campus when I was a young teen because I was forced to travel with my sisters as they looked at universities to attend. I think I can probably map all of the Seven Sisters colleges in the area! Both of my sisters ended up attending Mount Holyoke College and I last visited it in 2000 at my sisters graduation. As for the map, the source aerial photography is a bit grainy, but it works [meta-data forthcoming]. I like the way the dodecagon came out and up next will be a diamond.

University of Texas at Austin Quilt

: rendered at 18,000 X 12,000 :

I finally got around to making the maps for the University of Texas at Austin. I’ve been sitting on this imagery for a few months and with the arrival of a guest from Austin I felt it was time to revisit Austin, Texas again.

For these three maps I used three different tessellations to create three different versions of the same geography. Unlike most of the maps in the Quilt Projection I had to reduce the source imagery to half of it’s original spatial resolution in order to create my normal sized tessellation of 6,000 x 6,000. Essentially, at 1ft per pixel the entire campus was 6,000 x 6,000 in size, so I had to reduce it to 3,000 x 3,000 to create the standard sized 6,000 x 6,000 tile I use for all the maps.

University of Southern California Quilt #2

: rendered at 18,000 X 12,000 :

Read my brief comments about USC in my previous entry.

Of note, is that after posting the last map I looked at the number of maps I’ve made of Los Angeles and realized that I have enough for a 2008 Calendar! I will definitely put one together in time for this Christmas season. And after even further review, I actually have enough maps for a series of different calendars- DC, California, Texas, various universities, and fractals. :-)

These two maps of the University of Southern California will be the last of Los Angeles for a bit. I am surprised by the amount of maps I have made of this sprawling city! Moreover, I see myself remapping much of the city in the not-so-distant future. There is a lot of places here left to discover. As for USC, I think it’s quite interesting how condensed the University Park Campus is. I thought GWU’s urban location was slighly cramped, but this university was able to fit a lot into a small area.

Columbine Quilt

: rendered at 18,000 X 12,000 :

Today is the 8 year anniversary of the tragedy at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. With what happened this week at Virginia Tech I felt that this map would be a way to honor those who passed away.

To this day I still remember sitting in math class watching it all unfold on TV in 1999. I remember seeing a friend of mine, who’s name I cannot recall, being interviewed on television. I had 10 friends from summer camp who were attending Columbine, but thankfully none were hurt.

Also related, but created unintentionally, are my two maps of Oklahoma City, where I inadvertently placed the Oklahoma City Memorial at the center of the maps.

University of South Florida Quilt with Clouds

: rendered at 9,000 X 6,000 :

I’ve only made one other map with clouds. Yet in that map the clouds did not take on any extra meaning beyond the subtle religious commentary on behalf of the Mormon Church. Yet this map relates to a conversation I had with my sister when she moved to Tampa Florida to teach at the University of South Florida. I asked “Are you prepared for a hurricane?” and her answer was what I expected, “Not yet.” The synthetic clouds in this map represent her likelihood of her experiencing a hurricane while living in Florida. I was unable to make the clouds look like a hurricane per se, but I was able to make them symmetrical, which aesthetically I like better. Regardless, I am worried about a major hurricane hitting Tampa and my sister being in the middle of it. Ironically, my two sisters & I all live in geographic locations that have some level of risk to them: one sister lives in San Francisco (earthquake), the other sister lives in Tampa (hurricane), and I live in Washington, DC (terrorism). Good thing my mom still lives in the midwest…

This rendering took 27 hours to complete, and it’s only half the normal size I usually make my maps. I originally tried to make it at the normal size(216 megapixels), but after 5 minutes and only 5 lines rendered, I decided to cancel the rendering and make it only half size. The reason for the extra rendering time is the nature of how the clouds are made. The depth of each ray of light that hits the clouds has to be determined, which slows down the entire rendering considerably.

Notice how this one isn’t completely symmetrical? Well, in that regards, it was a total mistake! Normally I just scrap the ones that I am not happy with, but I decided to keep this one to simply thrown in some flair to this series.

: rendered at 18,000 X 12,000 :

I decided to make a complete series out of UCLA. It’s not like I have some hidden desire to be at UCLA, rather it was the imagery that was ready to use when I got the hairbrained idea of making 5 prints in a row. Regardless, I am pleased with how they turned out… even the one that didn’t turn out the way I expected (#3).

: rendered at 18,000 X 12,000 :

A friend of mine went to school at the University of Indiana in Bloomington. She asked for a map, so I made one! What makes this map slightly different is that I didn’t obtain the imagery from the USGS but from the Indiana University University Information Technology Services. I should probably download imagery of Indianapolis to follow the USGS lineage, but for now, this imagery will suffice.
