This tirade against the State of Virginia was written one month after the American Civil War began. At the end of the article there is the assertion that for the previous 20 years Virginians had been plotting to overthrow the Union and the Retrocession of Alexandria was one step in the process. By obtaining Arlington Heights, present-day Rosslyn, Virginia, the State of Virginia was able to obtain a militarily important piece of land where cannons could fire upon Washington. As I noted before, later in 1861 Abraham Lincoln mentioned this liability in his first State of Union delivered to Congress.

A Shower of Proclamations.; Arlington Heights.

The New York Times, May 9, 1861

Gov. LETCHER has issued a proclamation full of lofty sentences and abounding in big words, calling upon Virginians to “rally in defence of the State,” to “uphold the flag of the Commonwealth,” and “maintain the rights of the South.” All this means a call upon the traitors and disloyal men, of whom he is the chief, in the once patriotic and true old State of Virginia, to arm against the Republic of which her own WASHINGTON was the founder, and against a Constitution which her JEFFERSON, her MADISON and MONROE — names so dear to the American people — aided so largely in framing,

Of all the treason against the Constitution and Union, that of Virginia is the rankest, the most inexcusable and the meanest. The noble and true patriots of her past history are dishonored, and the graves of her wise and true men polluted by it. Of all the States, there is not one so linked to the Union by hallowed memories, by ties which all mankind in all ages have regarded as sacred, as Virginia. Her history bears the names dearest to the American heart — of patriots who labored most, fought most, sacrificed most and suffered most for that Union which her degenerate sons would shiver to-day. Of all the States, she has least cause of complaint. She has enjoyed more of the patronage, more of the offices, and exercised a greater influence in shaping the policy of the Government, than any other State. She has asked nothing that has not been granted — demanded nothing that has not been conceded. And yet hers is the heart that is foulest with treason, the hand that threatens to be reddest with the blood of loyal and true men!

The Governor of South Carolina has issued his proclamation, and though representing the smallest save one of all the seceding States, his tone is the loudest, his boast the largest, and his words the biggest of them all. We can respect Georgia for her real strength, while we execrate her treason. She was among the strong States of the Union, and is strongest among those that have seceded, and might, therefore, speak with something of power; but for little South Carolina, the verriest bantam of the secession brood, to flap its puny wings and crow so defiantly, is one of the jokes of the age. Virginia could put South Carolina in its breeches pocket, and yet South Carolina speaks so patronizingly, so condescendingly, so full of motherly regard for the Old Dominion, that were it not for the census and the map, one would suppose that Virginia was some helpless and oppressed little community, too weak to think even of defending itself. And, then, to see how meekly and humbly Virginia receives her proffers of aid — to see the once proud and haughty Virginia — the mother of Presidents and nursery of heroes — the once chivalrous, self-reliant, noble Virginia, submissively and gratefully receiving nursery pap from a spoon in the hands of South Carolina, is a tableau worth a day’s journey to see.

JEFFERSON DAVIS, too, has issued his proclamation, tendering his aid, and forwarding his starving troops to Virginia. Virginia food is to feed them — Virginia money is to pay them — Virginia soil is to be desecrated, and her social life demoralized by them. The war is transferred to her valleys, and her cities are to be made a camp. And yet Virginia submits. She forgets her former chivalry — her boasted strength. Three months ago she assumed to be the arbiter of the destinies of the nation; to-day she is the protege and follower of South Carolina, and the tool of JEFFERSON DAVIS. She yields a craven deference to the one, and bears submissively the burdens of the other.

And last, though not least. Brig. Gen. COCKE has issued his proclamation. He is in command of the Potomac Border of Virginia. Whether he is a Virginian he does not inform us, and history is silent on the subject. It may be that he is, or it may be that he holds the border as one of the myrmidons of JEFFERSON DAVIS. He, too, like his illustrious compeers, the trio of Governors, uses the language of grandiloquence. Hear him:

“The Capital has never been threatened by us. It is not now threatened. It is beyond and outside the limits of the free and sovereign State of Virginia. The North has not openly, and according to the usage of civilized nations, declared war on us. We make no war on them — but should the soil of Virginia, or the grave of WASHINGTON, be polluted by the tread of a single man in arms from north of the Potomac, it will cause open war.”

According to Brig. Gen. COCKE, we shall have open “war,” then, for, just as sure as that the sun shall rise and set, thousands of men in arms from the north of the Potomac will be in Virginia within a week.

It can hardly have escaped notice, that the Virginia authorities lay very great stress on the inviolability of Virginia soil. Gov. LETCHER and Gen. COCKE both state that Virginia wages no war against the Federal Government, but the moment any United States soldier steps in arms upon the soil of the State, that act will be regarded as a declaration and the actual commencement of war.

This undoubtedly has more than a general meaning. It is intended to prevent the Government from taking possession of Arlington Heights, which command Washington, and which must be held if the Capital is to he saved. These heights are in Alexandria, which used to form part of the District of Columbia, but was ceded back to the State of Virginia by Congress in 1846. Now, these heights are part of the soil of that State, and the occupation of them by the Government will be regarded and resented, as an act of invasion.

It is scarcely necessary to say that it ought to be done, and beyond all question will be done the moment it is necessary, in spite of this menace. The fact that the menace is made proves that Virginia only seeks a pretext for assuming an openly hostile attitude to the Government, — and if she does not get one here, she will find one somewhere else. Loyalty or forbearance that rests on so flimsy a foundation as this, should not have a feather’s weight on the action of the Government. Whenever Gen. SCOTT deems it necessary, as a military precaution, to take possession of those heights, it will undoubtedly be done. The Government has a right to occupy and hold, for military reasons, any part of any State under its jurisdiction.

It is altogether probable that some such contingency as the present was in view, when the leading Virginia politicians urged the secession of that portion of the District of Columbia. They have been plotting the violent overthrow of the Government for twenty years, — and written records remain to show that the leaders of this treasonable plot made provision for every possible contingency. The whole State of Virginia was carefully studied with a view to military operations against the United States Government, more than twenty-five years ago. Nothing is more probable than that reasons of this sort were among the motives for seeking renewed possession by the State of that portion of the District which commands the Capital. The retrocession was granted out of pure good nature, and with that utter blindness to future contingencies which has characterized the action of Northern public men for many years. Not a thought was given to the military importance of the position, because nobody then believed it possible that the State of Virginia would ever be at war with the Federal Government, — while the members of Congress from that State were at that very moment plotting its overthrow, and using the good nature of the North as the means for accomplishing that object.

It was held by many at the time that the retrocession was unconstitutional, and therefore void. Whether this be so or not, we presume the Government will have very little hesitation about making it practically a nullity, whenever the safety of the Capital may render its military possession necessary.

Instead of producing one or two news reports, which I expected (specifically one about the Van Jones resignation), the news organization produced no less than seven in the last week. On the flip side, there wasn’t many other articles or videos produced by any of the major news organizations in the same period that address the questions surrounding the world changing event. As I posited last week, I am still curious as to why Russia Today continues to be the only news organization covering this contentious topic. Does the Russian government believe in the conspiracy theory? Does the Russian government hope to destabilize America by producing propaganda that makes American’s question the official story? I still don’t know, but I think its important to understand why no other news organization, privately owned or state sponsored, is aggressively reporting this issue as much as Russia Today.

Today I read the New York Times article American Antiwar Movement Plans an Autumn Campaign Against Policies on Afghanistan and noticed that Rethink Afghanistan was mentioned. Earlier this year, during Easter weekend, I was solicited by a friend who works with the organization to voluntarily dress up like the easter bunny and hand out easter eggs around Chinatown and the White House. The video above is the result of two days of volunteering and while I was saving the video for a blog entry next Easter*, I felt compelled to share it today.

…..4 months after this video was filmed……

There are more soldiers going to Afghanistan today —-not less

51 percent of Americans now feel the war in Afghanistan is not worth fighting

August 2009 was the bloodiest month since the war began

Afghanistan is the graveyard of Empires

Obama campaigned on bringing the troops home, but he hasn’t done so, and I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

Imagine all the money that could be spent on free healthcare for all Americans that is currently being spent fighting unwinnable wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

* I also have about a dozen pictures of this action and another video of me trying not to get arrested by police officer in Chinatown. I plan on posting them in a future entry…

…from life to death to life… Its rather amazing how much development has taken place since the war ended over 60 years ago. I just hope this type of bombing never happens again.

What a poorly written lead by the BBC. It should say something like “Pentagon Bans Google Street View from Military Bases.” Saying “Google map-makers” are banned implies that people who use the service of Google Maps are also banned. But that is not the case; I can zoom into many military bases, but what I cannot do, and the point of the story, is to use the Street View feature within a military base.

Of course they shouldn’t be making a Streetview dataset of any military bases in the first place. Call this a very stupid mistake on behalf of Google. How is this helpful? Knowing where the F-14′s are housed is not information that can be used by the general public. Just like I don’t need to know how DC’s steam pipe network is laid out (a dataset that is withheld from the public last time I checked). Basically, its one thing to do Street View on public streets in innocuous cities, but its an entirely different story when they map out the inside of a military base.

I’ve had quite a few military personnel visit my Street View Improvised Explosive Device animation since I put it on-line last year in June (it was created about a week after Street View was released to the public). I would like to believe that the military is aware of how people can exploit Street View, but nearly 9 months later it doesn’t look like some of the military brass has taken any warnings seriously.

Also, I truly wonder if and when Google will release Street View for Washington, DC. With Google and National Geospatial Intelligence Agency already censoring downtown DC, I doubt that they would release DC’s Streetview imagery without some significant modifications (aka redactions). However, if Google does release DC Street View I already know exactly where I plan on making the next digital IED…. [you will just have to wait & see]

I don’t know why I decided to make maps of the Pentagon & CIA, but I figured why not just focus on a couple buildings? Most of my maps are comprised of specific areas instead of specific buildings, so in some respects, while they are not technically different, these two maps are a slight departure from the norm.

Today Angela & I took part in the America Supports You “Freedom Walk,” and I must say that we definitely celebrated our freedom….

read my account:

The original plan was to get a group of friends together to create a human banner using our shirts to convey the single message. The Department of Defense sponsored America Supports You, “Freedom Walk,” explicitly outlawed signs and banners (where is the freedom of speech there?) so we were going to circumvent this “rule” by using our shirts as our collective banner.

Angela & I had planned to get together on Saturday night to work on our t-shirts but because we were unable to secure a large group of friends to spell out N-O-W-A-R. When the morning arrived, we separately jotted down some slogans on our shirts and then met up at the Foggy Bottom metro stop to ride to the Pentagon together.

Upon arriving at the Pentagon we saw that there were a lot of people who had already picked up their free t-shirts for the march the day before and were wearing them to the march. We had our subversive shirts on underneath our clothing to make sure we were allowed in to the march.

Walking around the Pentagon to the entrance of the rally area was quite interesting. There were armed personnel on the rooftop with binoculars surveying the entire area making sure nothing bad was happening.

This security measure seemed important, yet when we went to the gates to obtain our shirts and show our registration, the security measure sincerely appeared to be only for looks….

First off, my registration was never checked. I had the print out with me, and offered to show it to the people working the check-in area, but they declined to look at it, and just handed me the “Freedom Walk” shirt.

Secondly, when we finally made our way to the security checkpoint, we were not frisked, nor was my bag check thoroughly. The officer just looked in the main compartment of my bag and didn’t ask me to move any of the items inside. I normally keep a Swiss Army knife on me at all times, but today I opted not to bring it, yet would it have mattered? There wasn’t a metal detector or a pat down, just a wink and a nod from the officers. Enjoy your freedom!

<img src="http://nikolasschiller.com/images/911fraghero.jpg"align="right"alt="insensitve kids"/>
After arriving at the rally point, the march had already begun and we walked over to the gates near the start of the march. There we found some members of Mayday DC who had brought markers and were tagging their new shirts with their own subversive messages. After seeing what they had wrote on their shirts, Angela suggested that we distance ourselves as far as possible from them.

Being 9/11 and day that is still a touchy subject for many Americans, these anarchists had written some of the most cruel and rude messages on their shirts. “Soldiers who frag their officers are our heroes,” and a couple other offensive slogans (check the pictures I took).

I wrote this on <a href="http://dc.indymedia.org/newswire/display/129872/index.php"target=_blank>DC Indymedia:

As a fellow dissenting freedom marcher, I felt that the protestors who had “Soldiers who frag theirs officers are my Heroes” and “Support troops who shoot their officers” written on their shirts were quite tackless and overtly abrasive
In fact, that had to be the worst messaging I’ve ever seen come from protestors in the Washington, DC area.

While I support your dissent, I sincerely felt that supporting violence is the most horrific and misguided attempt at activism one can do.

Why be flagrantly agressive to people who might have had loved ones who died on 9/11? Or have children in the military who are following the orders of Rumsfailed?

To convey such a message of violence, is not only insincere, it’s immature, and hurtful. This is not how the anti-war message should be portrayed to the world.

If you are for peace, ideologically promote it, and be it.
Otherwise you are a hypocrite.

<img src="http://nikolasschiller.com/images/911fraghero2.jpg"align="left"alt="insensitve kids"/>

Angela had written on one side “While my heart goes out to those who died on 9-11, a War on Terror is still Terror,” and on the other “Support the Troops, Bring them Home.” On my shirt, I only wrote on the front side, “Support the Troops, Bring them Home,” and “No Blood 4 Oil.”

As we started to march and distance ourselves from the other protestors, who already had a security detail following them, we decided to take off our shirts to show the roughly 4,000 marchers our feelings about the war, and more importantly the bogus PR stunt the Bush administration had pulled off by correlating 9/11 with supporting our troops in Iraq (which had nothing to do with 9/11!).

No one really gave us any comments about shirts while we marched. Prior to getting away from the other protestors, we heard marchers yelling at them for their insensitive shirts. Angela and I just held hands and walked as fast as possible so as many people as possible would read our backs (when marching, few people look backwards to read the fronts of shirts!).

<img src="http://nikolasschiller.com/images/911freedommarch.jpg"align="right"alt="4 thousand people"/>

At the one media checkpoint, the only one along the march route where the media was allowed to be present, we were stopped by a man named Juan Carlos, who stated he was from the AP (I somewhat think he was lying and was actually a DIA agent stopping protestors so their picture could be taken and potential domestic terrorist files started), who wanted to interview us about why we were wearing what we were wearing. We spoke with him for a good five minutes, and about the time we were finishing up, the other protestors (above) had caught up and decided to come over to Juan to be interviewed. While we were asked, they just showed up, and it annoyed me that they said they were with us, while they technically weren’t.

The media checkpoint was right at the start of the memorial bridge, and I must say that Angela & I definitely made this part of the march memorable!

About midway across the bridge we noticed an SUV brigade slowly moving across the bridge on the left side. I told Angela that I bet it was Donald Rumsfeld because I heard that he spoke at the morning rally.

We passed the SUVs and noticed a hub-bub coming from the right side of the bridge. I flashed a look over to Angela and we both started walking a notch or two faster. It was Rumsfeld ahead… I eventually reached the secret service agent behind him and started to pull out my tiny Canon Elph- he looked at me in panic! I snapped the picture of the back of Rumsfeld’s head, within arms length, directly behind him- it was the last photograph my camera took.

We kept quiet the entire time. I handed the dying camera to Angela so she could square up for a shot of me in front of Rumsfeld. The idea that flashed through our heads was that if we were going to get his attention, we have to face him. So I started making my way around the secret service agent on my left, by going around him to his left, at that point the other secret service officer on my right, who panicked with the camera, saw the back of my shirt and started to push me out of the way, knowing that I was up to no good.

At that point, just past the agent and in 3 feet in front of Rumsfeld, I yelled, “Donald Rumsfeld, you should be fired, you illegally invaded a nation without an exit strategy, Shame on You!”

Angela proceeded to yell at the man as well, but I didn’t hear what she said because a different plain clothes secret service agent had his hand around my neck and was saying, “You are coming this way with me to the side of the bridge,” I responded with, “It’s cool, I’ve said my piece (peace),”

He brought me over to an African American plainclothes agent. I shook his hand and asked what his name was– Reggie. The other agent did that point- two fingers pointing to the eyes, then one finger pointing back at the subject, non-audibly saying, “Keep your eyes on him.” And he did for the rest of the March…. As we continued on our way, with Reggie about 10 ft behind us, two reporters came over to Angela & I. One was from the AFP and the other was from the Washington Post. I spoke with the AFP reporter (which turns out that I am only degree away from through close friends) about what we were up to, and what had just transpired.

While our names were not used, I did find this <a href="http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200509/s1457917.htm"target=_blank>AFP report:

But at least two protesters wearing T-shirts with messages opposing the war in Iraq managed to take part, though they were closely followed by US Secret Service agents.

We spoke with the reporters for a few minutes and made our way to the end of the march.

There were some of my loosely affiliated activists holding signs along the perimeter of the march and I saw a “freedom marcher” throw a (free) bottle of water at them. Apparently one of them even got punched in the stomach… When we arrived at the concert area before having to hear Clint Black’s “Iraq & Roll” (gag). We left the grounds and made our way back to the metro by way of 23rd St. We gave a police officer from Honolulu directions to the Police Officer Memorial. We said our goodbyes at the metro and met back up at the Adams Morgan Day festival. We handed out thousands of Operation Ceasefire flyers…..Then went to an Operation Ceasefire meeting…. Without a doubt the best post-9/11 I’ve ever had.

……which roughly translates to:

Two anti-war demonstrators were able to show their difference, in the midst of this tide of t-shirts Pentagon.

Nikolas Shiller, 24, and Angela Giacometti, 29, were disguised as “pro-Pentagon, pulling on the garment. They then returned. “Support our troops and bring them home” could be read on that of Angela. “War is not the answer. No blood for oil, “says Nikolas. The protester says he could approach the Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who took a long walkabout, saying “that this war was illegal.”

Shortly after, a woman approached Nikolas: “You’re disgusting, ‘she cried, full of emotion and rage, reminding him that” soldiers are dying for freedom “of speech.
