Google’s Gone “Hybrid”
|| 7/23/2005 || 2:36 pm || Comments Off on Google’s Gone “Hybrid” || ||

Hybrid = Aerial & Satellite Imagery + Roads + Placenames

Anyone who has used GIS software before know that this isn’t special, but for those new to the game of spatial information, Google Maps inclusion of both the road layer and aerial photography layer is pretty nifty. I personally like it better than looking at only the roads layer & only the imagery layer (how it was before). Oh hybrid, you are so cool. I wish there were more cars like you….

The Washington National Cathedral Lenz
|| 7/22/2005 || 7:16 pm || Comments Off on The Washington National Cathedral Lenz || ||

This rendering was made for a very special friend of mine. You can see her apartment building all over this rendering (I believe you can see it about 20 times!) and you can see the Washington National Cathedral 8 times reflected around the center (hence the name).

Although the cathedral is actually an Episcopal church, I think that the layout of the rendering, and more specifically, the way Wisconsin Ave. forms the central ridge, makes the image look very similar to the Irish Cross (below).

This is actually the second rendering because I had to scrap the first one because there was a slight defect and has been deleted. The square within the circle was too large and I had to shrink it to make it look like the rest of the renderings in the “Lenz Project.” Regardless, I look forward to seeing this one hanging on her wall shortly :-)

Bizzack
|| || 11:46 am || Comments Off on Bizzack || ||

I’ve been too busy to blog lately, so there is a huge gap called “July 2005” in my blog! I spent so much time doing the OSCE festivities at the beginning of the month, that I had to take a small break. In the next few days I am going to go backward and fill in some of the blank days with various memories and thoughts, and hopefully stay on the ball when it comes to keeping my blog up to date, even when my MySpace profile gets more hits than this website does….

So a quick recap July… Went to Charleston, went to Philly, began mosaicing in Anacostia (a map no less!), and I’m quite content with life :)

Ballwin Mandala
|| 7/18/2005 || 12:02 pm || Comments Off on Ballwin Mandala || ||

This rendering turned out nicely, although I rendered it too large and had to scale down the projection to remove some pixilation. This rendering is also the first derivative of the Ballwin Lenz #2, and I was able to keep my old apartment building at 148 G Cumberland Park Ln. within the rendering. You gotta love art that hits close to home! (I say this everytime!!!!)

More DC prints
|| 7/16/2005 || 1:21 pm || Comments Off on More DC prints || ||

Today I ordered 3 more DC specific prints today! I am printing the DC renderings out first because I think I’ll have a better time having a gallery showing when I can sell the idea that it’s all DC-based subject matter by a DC resident… I already have hanging my house (in crappy frames!) Abstract DC, DC Lenz #2, DC Lenz #3, DC Lenz #4, Star of DC, Washington Monument Lenz, DC Memory, and String of DC. Next up will be Jefferson Mandala, Georgetown Lenz #2, and Mall Quilt. Damn, that is 11 prints altogether, and I still have a bunch more DC based renderings that need to be printed!

Why did I find this?
|| 7/15/2005 || 6:52 pm || Comments Off on Why did I find this? || ||

I just wrote this e-mail to Google:

Google Earth is here!

This link is listed when my name, “Nikolas Schiller” is searched. I have
the robots.txt file setup so that google does not traverse my website.
However, on the day that this entry was posted, a staff member from Google
in California visited my website (I have the logs to prove this) and now
that entry is listed. This violates my robots.txt request and I find it
in bad taste for Google to promote itself in such a way. Please remove
the URL listed above from your database.

Sincerely,
Nikolas Schiller

Grrrrrr…..

I know it’s futile to try to prevent my information from getting outside of the electronic berlin wall I’ve setup around my website, but it’s still annoying to have the most valuable corporate entity on the planet violate their own rules!

I look forward to their reply.

Google Earth review
|| 7/14/2005 || 5:34 pm || Comments Off on Google Earth review || ||

Above is a screen shot of downtown DC with nearly all the default layers turned on. I call it “Google’s DC TMI,” which basically means, Too Much Information! I feel it geographically represents the cacophony of information that Google offers.

So on to the review of Google Earth…

I am mentioned in the Northwest Current

This is probably one of my favorite articles regarding the OSCE festivities.

best line:
“The last landlocked colony,” :-) I had to throw that geographic reference in there!
