[**11:11:18 PM**] YOU CAN SEE THE OPRAH 20TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL TOMORROW AT 4:00 P.M. RIGHT HERE ON ABC 7. LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT. RETAIL GIANT WAL-MART IS UNDER FIRE TONIGHT. A DOCUMENTARY AIMED AT STOPPING PEOPLE FROM SHOPPING AT THE WORLD’S LARGEST RETAILER DEBUTED TODAY. SOME 7,000 ORGANIZATIONS INCLUDING THE FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST ARE SHOWING THE ANTI-WAL-MART DOCUMENTARY.

IN ALEXANDRIA TODAY A GROUP PICKETED A LOCAL WAL-MART THERE. THEY CLAIM THE RETAIL CHAIN GIVES EMPLOYEES LOW WAGES AND FEW BENEFITS. USING SWEATSHOP LABOR, SELLING PRODUCTS THAT NOT ORGANIC, AND ALSO DON’T GIVE ANYTHING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITIES. WAL-MART SAYS THEY DO WELL PIE THEIR EMPLOYEES. CORPORATE OFFICIALS SAY THEIR ARCH PAY IS UP TO $10 AN HOUR. NOW HERE’S A LOOK AT WHAT’S MAKING NEWS AROUND THE NATION TONIGHT.

A DOCUMENTARY AIMED AT STOPPING PEOPLE FROM SHOPPING ALWAL-MART DEBUTED TODAY. THE GROUP IS UPSET OVER THE COMPANY’S HIRING AND PAY PRACTICES. RICHARD REEVE HAS THE LATEST. …

GREETED SHOPPERS AT THIS ALEXANDRIA WAL-MART. COME OUT WITH THESE UNUSUALLY LOW PRICES AND THEY HURT THEIR OWN EMPLOYEES. THESE PROTESTERS SAY EMPLOYEES GET LOW WAGES, FEW BEN FTS AND WORK IN AN ANTI-UNION ATMOSPHERE, SWEATSHOP LABOR, DON’T GIVE ANYTHING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY. …

THE FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST IS AMONG 7,000 ORGANIZATIONS SHOWING AN ANTI-WAL-MART DOCUMENTARY. I HAVE SEEN SMALL COMMUNITIES FORCED OUT. WAL-MART SAYS IT DOES DO WELL BY ITS EMPLOYEES. THE RETAIL GIANT SAYS AVERAGE WAGE IS $10 PER HOUR. LAST YEAR WE PROVIDED FOR 210,000 NEW JOBS.

DESPITE THIS, SHOPPERS AGREE WAL-MART HAS A GREAT BOTTOM LINE. THERE IS NO OTHER PLACE THAT IS NEARBY, HAS A HUGE SELECTION AT THE PRICES THAT THEY HAVE. WAL-MART EMPLOYEES CLAIM MANY EMPLOYEES END UP ON MEDICAID, COSTING TAXPAYERS MORE THAN $1 BILLION IN BENEFITS. THE RETAILERS SAY IT IS REVAMPING THEIR HEALTH CARE BENEFITS. THEY SELL $100 MILLION WORTH OF MERCHANDISE TO CUSTOMERS EACH WEEK.

[**11:13:55 PM**] A NEW MOVIE PREMIERED IN WASHINGTON TODAY THAT TAKES ON ONE OF THE BIGGEST NAMES IN BUSINESS. IT’S CALLED WAL-MART, THE HIGH COST OF LOW PRICES AND IT’S CAUSING QUITE A BIT OF CONTROVERSY. JEFF NAPSHIN HAS REACTION TO THE FILM. RETAIL GIANT WAL-MART IS ENCOURAGING WORKERS TO GO ON WELFARE. IT’S A SERIOUS SUBJECT FOR A MOVIE, WHICH MAY EXPLAIN WHY FILMMAKERS DECIDED TO PREMIERE THEIR NEW WAL-MART DOCUMENTARY IN 7,000 CHURCHES AND SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

WAL-MART IS THE BIGGEST PRIVATE EMPLOYER IN THE WORLD TODAY AND I WAS REALLY CRITICAL FOR US TO LOOK AT THIS MOVIE, TALK ABOUT IT, NOT ACCEPT IT LOCK, STOCK AND BARREL BUT CONSIDER THE ISSUES OF THE SOCIAL IMPACT OF THIS HUGE COMPANY. BETHESDA UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST SHOWED THE FILM SUNDAY.

60 PARISHIONERS GATHERED TO WATCH A PORTION OF THE DOCUMENTARY WHICH ATTACKS WAL-MART FOR HOW IT TREATS EMPLOYEES. IT REINFORCED MY OPINION OF WAL-MART. WHICH IS WHAT? THAT THEY ARE ANTIUNION, THEY DON’T PROVIDE ADEQUATE HEALTH CARE. SHOPPED AT WAL-MART, I’VE SEEN WHAT THE STORES ARE LIKE, I KNOW PEOPLE WHO HAVE WORKED THERE. IT BROUGHT FORWARD THE THINGS I KNOW THAT ARE THE BAD SIDE BUT AT THE SAME TIME IT DOES DO GOOD THINGS AS A COMPANY. COMPANY OFFICIALS ARE TRYING TO GET OUT THAT MESSAGE. …

THE ANTI-WAL-MART MOVEMENT IS BIGGER THAN THE FILM. THESE DEMONSTRATORS WERE HERE ALL AFTERNOON PROTEST THEEING THE RETAIL GIANT, CRITICIZING WALLING MART FOR EMPHASIS ON LOW PRICES WHICH THEY SAY LEADS TO LOW VALUES. I CAME BECAUSE I’M SICK AND TIRED OF THE EXPLOITATION OF LATINO IMMIGRANT WORKERS BY THIS MONSTER COMPANY.

[**09:06:49 AM**] A CONTROVERSIAL NEW FILM TODAY. IT’S CALLED “WAL-MART: THE HIGH COST OF LOW PRICES” AND IT ATTACKS THE CREDIBILITY OF THE RETAIL GIANT. NEWS 4’S JEFF NAPSHIN JOINS US FROM BETHESDA UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, WHICH IS ABOUT TO SHOW THE FILM. REPORTER: THIS IS ONE OF THOUSAND OF SCREENINGS TAKING PLACE ACROSS THE COUNTRY TODAY, A 20-MINUTE SELECTION FROM THE FILM. …

WAL-MART IS THE BIGGEST PRIVATE EMPLOYER IN THE WORLD TODAY. AND IT’S CRITICAL FOR US TO LOOK AT THIS MOVIE, TALK ‘IT, NOT TALK ABOUT IT, NOT ACCEPT IT LOCK, STOCK AND BARREL BUT TO CONSIDER HAD ISSUES OF THE SOCIAL IMPACT OF THIS HUGE COMPANY. …

THE MOVIE MAKER HAS A REAL POINT OF VIEW, HE DEFINITELY HAS SOME HUGE ISSUES WITH WAL-MART. HE WALKS THROUGH THE CORPORATE CULTURE, THE ECONOMIC IMPACT BOTH HERE AND ACROSS THE WORLD IN TERM OF WHAT IT’S DONE FOR WORKERS IN PLACES LIKE CHINA AND PLACES LIKE THAT, THE HIDDEN COST TO TAXPAYERS IN TERM OF HEALTHCARE, AND FROM MY PERSPECTIVE, AS A UNION EMPLOYEE, THE ANTI-UNIONIZATION EFFORTS THAT THEY REALLY FORCE.

REPORTER: BUT IN ALL FAIRNESS YOU HAVE TO ADMIT WAL-MART DOES PROVIDE A LOT OF BENEFITS, OBVIOUSLY LOW PRICES, EFFICIENCY, MANY FOLKS SAY IT’S BEEN GOOD FOR THE U.S. ECONOMY. ABSOLUTELY, I LIVED IN THE SOUTH WHEN I WAS IN THE ARMY AND WAL-MART WAS THERE AND PEOPLE USED IT, IT DID EMPLOY JOBS. BUT IF YOU LOOK AT THE DOWNTOWNS IN THOSE AREAS, THEY’VE BEEN CHANGED FOREVER. BEYOND AN ECONOMIC COST THERE’S A SOCIAL COST TO EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS WITH WAL-MART.

REPORTER: THANKS FOR JOINING US. THAT SHOWING WILL BE IN TEN OR 15 MINUTES. WAL-MART OFFICIALS CALL THIS A PROPAGANDA VIDEO AND SAY MANY OF THE ACCUSATIONS IN THE FILM ARE SIMPLY NOT TRUE. A NEW PACKAGE FOR AN OLD MESSAGE. IT IS FULL OF ACCUSATIONS AGAINST OUR COMPANY, MANY OF WHICH ARE SIMPLY NOT TRUE.
