This is the obituary for my Grandpa that was published today in the Sioux City Journal:

Samuel Oscar Baker, 84, of Sioux City died Thursday, April 13, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital of natural causes.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Roger Madden of First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the United States Army Reserve. Visitation with the family present will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Sam was born June 19, 1921, in Sioux City, the son of Louis and Ida (Nakmanovich) Baker. He lived all of his life in Sioux City. He graduated from Central High School and attended Stanford University. He served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II. *

After the war, he met and married Marion DeLong on June 16, 1949, in O’Neil, Neb. He worked as office manager for Needham Packing and then Flavorland Industries until his retirement.

He enjoyed fishing, golfing and bowling. He was an avid Cubs and Hawkeyes fan. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Marion; a son and his wife, Richard and Kristen of Lake Forest, Calif.; two daughters, Barbara Schiller and her special friend, Tim Stevens of St. Louis, Mo., and Marilyn and her husband, Jim Scott of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Connor and Rory (children of Richard and Kristen), Noel, Serena, Nikolas (children of Barbara) and Pam and Steve (children of Marilyn and Jim); a special niece and her husband, Ellen and Mark Ayers of Sioux Center, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dan and Dave; and an infant son, Robert Allen Baker.

Pallbearers will be Dean DeLong Jr., Mark Ayers, Jim Scott, Steve Scott, Nikolas Schiller and Rich Volk.
