Tessellations of Time: A 2006 Recap
|| 12/31/2006 || 10:42 am || Comments Off on Tessellations of Time: A 2006 Recap || ||

So I just got done going through all of the 2006 blog entries counting up all the maps I made this year. It turns out that I made 206 maps in 2006! There are a few maps that I did not publish on my website, so the number is technically higher. I wonder if that is a record of some sort? Most maps made in one year by a sole cartographer. Well, it might be, but then again, my maps are not your traditional maps!

Check the complete listing after the fold…

Who is still getting screwed?
|| 12/16/2006 || 6:14 pm || Comments Off on Who is still getting screwed? || ||

I made these two maps to show my displeasure with Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton for her unconstitutional bill that will give her a vote in the House of Representatives by granting Utah an extra representative. Without any representation in the Senate, Washington, DC resident’s will only be 1/3 represented in Congress- less than any other American. While some feel that 1/3 is better than none, the fundamental question question must be asked….

Answering a question from September
|| 12/15/2006 || 5:52 pm || Comments Off on Answering a question from September || ||

Back in September I answered the reporter’s question about what I was going to do next rather vaguely. I didn’t want to be the person who mentioned the film first….

And Hilton has been busy editing “Babylon Central,” which he describes as “a low-budget feature shot in high definition so it looks good.” Shot locally with a mostly amateur cast, “it’s very much about D.C.: cross-cultural threads, music threads, conspiratorial political threads, a love story. There’s a lot going on in a 90-minute movie,” says Hilton, who hopes to have a rough cut in the next month. Thievery may release it itself, or it may find a distributor. Hilton insists: “I don’t have any delusions of grandeur. I’ve never made a movie before.”

Like the “Icositetragon of Northwestern Station in Chicago,” I am not including another company’s name for the title of this map. It’s the worst polluter in the world…

I used .65 meter resolution from March 30th, 2003 and released to the public on October 1st, 2004. There was also .3 meter imagery available taken at a newer date, but I chose to use the older imagery because the download size would be smaller. More later….

Park La Brea Quilt by Nikolas Schiller

Park La Brea (Spanish: La Brea – The tar, after the nearby La Brea Tar Pits) is a sprawling apartment complex in the Miracle Mile District of Los Angeles, California. It encompasses more than 4,000 apartments in both high-rise and garden-style buildings, and sits on 160 acres (0.65 km2) of land with numerous lawns. It’s layout is geometric and lends itself to my map style. This is my third iteration of the series featuring the area around Park La Brea in Los Angeles, California. Its one of my favorites :-)

Park La Brea’s geometric design allows for some excellent manipulations. For the first time in a VERY long time I’ve decided to create not one, but two fractals of a specific location. Number 3 will be up shortly…
