In March of this year I created 15 banners that are displayed randomly each time the website loads. Earlier this week a friend of mine in Shanghai, China sent me my name in Simplified Chinese. She also sent me some useful words I plan on adding to some future maps. I’ve decided to make another batch of banners using this text. There are now a total of 34 different banners.

Socio Ditata Labore – Revisited

Discovered & translated in May, this engraving is now on the splash page of my website- an interactive Atlas Nouveau so to speak.

There are now over 1600 different images that randomly showcase the cartographic labor involved in the creation of this website. Just hit reload to cycle through them.

A few months ago I conceived this series titled’ “LA Interchanges.” The plan was to make maps of the highway interchanges throughout Los Angeles, California. I’ve made maps using highway interchanges before (MacArthur Maze Quilt and Omaha Intersection) so this concept is not necessarily new, but the idea of having a series dedicated to one geographic region with a focus on one aspect of the built environment is what makes this series interesting to me. Ultimately I’ll make a special Google Map Mashup for this series, but it’s still got a long way to go- there are a lot of interchanges. The plan is to slowly go North to South looking for interesting interchanges.

When obtaining the imagery for this project I discovered that the USGS has removed the 2004 imagery of Los Angeles! This means that I cannot make comparison maps like I did with Dodgers Stadium – 2004 – 2006. Moreover, I think the quality of the 2006 imagery is poor. It’s bleached out and fuzzy looking at the full resolution. After reading the meta-data I know why- its from scanned photographs taken in 2002! So it’s not really new imagery after all, but reprocessed old imagery.

Following up on my discovery of Google’s censorship, I’ve decided to make my next maps be in the area in Washington, DC that is currently censored. By mapping this area, I can easily claim that I’ve beat Google to the map for each location.

The area around the State Department is one that is quite familiar to me. The dorm that I lived in for 2 different years at GWU is located in this map. Alongside the State Department Building (the largest building in the map), there is the Federal Reserve Building, Office of Personnel Management, National Academy of Sciences, and a few other of buildings of note, like the Red Cross HQ and the World Health Organization.

Lincoln Memorial Quilt 2005 #2

I made a couple different tessellations of the area around the Lincoln Memorial. This map features the same imagery used for this map, but it’s tessellated differently to create a new design.

Lincoln Memorial Quilt 2005

I decided to start mapping the area that Google has censored. I discovered that the Lincoln Memorial lies on the line of censorship [link to Google Map zoom-in]. The line starts right at the stairs of the Lincoln Memorial, which means that the reflection pool imagery in my map is newer than Google’s imagery. The Vietnam Memorial is also newer in my map but is censored by Google.
