I am quite impressed with this creation. This Interactive Globe for Google Earth features tessellated aerial photography of the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, DC.

Using the central 3,000 x 3,000 pixels from Adams Morgan Quilt #2 I created a new 9,000 x 6,000 tessellation. By doing some simple math, a 3,000 x 3,000 pixel tile fits into 9,000 x 6,000 exactly 6 times (3 tiles across the top row and 3 tiles across the bottom row) and when overlaid on to the surface of the earth, the tessellation exhibits the exact same properties as the 3 tiled polar coordinate projections that I experimented with earlier this year.

While I created a special tessellation for this layer, I found that I can overlay any quilt projection map that I’ve created (there are over 300 now). The only drawback is that the quilts are not perfect tessellations, only their centers are. I’ve rendered all of the quilts at a 3:2 aspect ratio (rectangle) so when they are overlaid on to the earth one side is the center (where the radial geometry eminates) and the opposite side is not. Thus when rotating the earth you get one side that has an “eye” and, of course, the other side does not. The work around is to take the center of any of the quilts and use that perfect tessellation as the basis for the wrap. By replicating the center, the “eye” becomes the entire quilt and when wrapped around the globe one cannot easily find the front or back because the tessellation does not exhibit radial geometry.
Release Notes:
1) Please be patient! The tessellation is 11 megabytes and will take a moment to download and a moment to load into Google Earth
2) The size of the tessellation might slow down some older computers which might have problems loading an 11 mb file
3) The zoom-in capabilities are limited because the file does not contain close-up details, rather only one 9,000 x 6,000 file
