taking a break until the new year

After making over 300 maps this year, I’ve decided to take a short break. Expect 2008 to be one interesting year!

My memories of Christmas will always be defined by the time I spent growing up in the Burtonwood Manor Condominiums in Ballwin, Missouri. The map above is of the 1,500 foot radius around childhood bedroom on the second floor of 148 Apartment G, Cumberland Park Ct. I remember helping my mother move out of the apartment in 2003 and now only the memories remain. This Christmas I am hanging out in DC without the family, so today’s map is a reflection on times past. After looking at Google’s imagery and comparing it with my imagery and it’s meta-data, I believe mine imagery is slightly newer. I am basing my theory on the apartment’s rooftop coloring. In Google’s imagery the rooftops appear to be multiple colors, which indicates the installation of new roofing shingles. In the USGS imagery, all of the buildings around my former apartment have the same colored shingle, except my old apartment which is darker. This means that either my apartment was the first to be re-shingled or Google is using imagery that is older than April 2006.

The other week I added 6 new graphics to the splash page and today I added two new graphics. They are two oversized .gifs that force the viewer to scroll over & down (respectively) to click on the X. With 8 different foreground graphics and 1,927 background graphics, the splash page now has 15,416 different visual combinations.

Moon Mars Conjunction

Screen grab from the Astroprof’s Page (Image produced using Stellarium)

Last night my next door neighbor and I lugged the telescope to my rooftop to look at the night sky. It was an exceptional night for celestial observations too. My neighbor had been letting me borrow the telescope for the last 3 months and I must say its been an absolute pleasure looking off into the cosmos– even through the dense light pollution surrounding Washington, DC.

Last night’s conjunction was definitely a high point of my celestial viewings, followed closely by seeing Saturn. In the telescope, Mars was visible but rather hard to see because of the relative brightness of the moon! My neighbor commented on Mars, “Is that brown spot a storm?” I laughed and said that was probably the surface of Mars that he was seeing. What was really neat was watching the conjunction take place. Around dusk, Mars was on the left of the Moon and by 10pm he was on the other side of the Moon.

screen grab links to google map

Lemme tell you, its one erect route. So someone recently sent me with a link to some of their GPS maps on Bicycling.com. I decided to look through their maps and upon further exploration, I stumbled on the map above. I looked at it and smiled. The author is “Jackonabike” and when you view the map with the “Points of Interest” turned on, the cameras look like little nodules [use your imagination].

It’s even more funny when you think that earlier this month I found 109 brothels just north of the shaft.

Mount Holyoke Quilt

Located in South Hadley, Massachusetts, Mount Holyoke College is the first all woman’s school in the United States of America. Founded by Mary Lyon as Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, it’s served as a model for how most all women’s schools were formed. I visited the campus when I was a young teen because I was forced to travel with my sisters as they looked at universities to attend. I think I can probably map all of the Seven Sisters colleges in the area! Both of my sisters ended up attending Mount Holyoke College and I last visited it in 2000 at my sisters graduation. As for the map, the source aerial photography is a bit grainy, but it works [meta-data forthcoming]. I like the way the dodecagon came out and up next will be a diamond.

This map features the transparent sphere originally used in the Lenz Project. By placing the sphere on the map, it magnifies whatever region it is placed over, and for this map it’s been placed at the center. I rendered the map at 150 megapixels instead of the standard 216 because I did not want to over-project area within the Lenz. As in, if the sphere magnifies the raster map too much it will cause it to blur when projected at a large size, so by limiting the size of the map I prevented the level of potential blurriness. The last map I made that used this process was the Pentagon Spheres, but this is first time I’ve used the Lenz at the center of a dodecagon quilt projection map. I hope to use this technique more in the future.
