For the last few weeks Van Jones, the White House’s Special Advisor for Green Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, has been vilified in the media and on-line because signed on to a document in 2004 that supported a new investigation on what happen on 9/11/01. Due to the subsequent public relations fallout, he resigned from his position over the weekend. Yesterday afternoon I decided to do a search for news articles related to this episode in 9/11 political theater and came across something I wasn’t exactly expecting.
About two weeks ago I began reviewing Russia Today‘s coverage of the 9/11 Truth Movement and realized that in the last year this news organization had produced more videos about this topic than any other official news source that I was aware of. The initial plan was to simply post the videos in an entry and ask the germane question of why was this topic being covered so aggressively by a news organization funded by a foreign government? Was it that Russia Today wanted to press the angle that the official story of 9/11 wasn’t true? Or maybe was Russia Today attempting to show that Russian society, in general, has a genuine interest in conspiracy theories? Or was it simply the fact that no other news organization was willing to give this topic more coverage?
When I did the Google search for 9/11, I noticed the Google AdWords advertisement (above) and was inspired to write this entry. There, before my eyes, was visual proof that not only was Russia Today promoting conspiracy theories, but they were actually paying Google to promote their coverage dealing with this hotly debated issue. After doing a few more queries, I found that it was only “9/11” that Russia Today had purchased AdWords for and surprisingly not for “Conspiracy Theory” or “Conspiracy Theories.”
I decided to click on the link in order to “see the facts” myself and was brought to their coverage from last year’s 9/11/08 anniversary titled “Who was involved in 9/11? Documentary reveals shocking facts.” This article features an interview with former member of the Italian parliament, Giulietto Chiesa, who was involved in the production of ZERO, a documentary that questions the official 9/11 story. This documentary was aired on Russia state TV Channel One the following day.
While this broadcast possibly answers my initial question about the popularity of conspiracy theories in Russian society, it doesn’t address why the news organization has purchased AdWords to promote it’s somewhat dated coverage of 9/11 conspiracy theories, or even why that specific link was chosen when there are newer video segments that have been produced by Russia Today since then (below).
In light of what happened to Van Jones, I expect Russia Today to cover his resignation this week. Since his downfall is directly related to support for another investigation, it would make sense that Russia Today continue their coverage of this topic. However, I also expect Russia Today to do what every other news organization has not. That being, actually revisiting the questions that Van Jones signed his name to.
Over the years I’ve learned how disinformation can operate in political theater and, well, its not pretty. Instead of attacking the message, the messenger is attacked and becomes the scapegoat. Forget the questions that were posed in the document that he signed his name on, and focus on the person who signed the document. By ignoring the nature of his participation, the news organizations gloss over the pertinent questions that were originally asked; questions that remain unanswered.
I myself have questions that remain unanswered. I’ve had them since that fateful day. They’ve manifested themselves in various degrees over the years- from internationally distributed artwork to actively following news reports about developments related to this unique issue. I prefer to keep a safe distance from being pigeonholed as a “conspiracy theorist,” a term which lends itself to being someone who is mentally unstable, an enemy of the state, and essentially, someone who is not be trusted. Its almost like a modern-day version of McCarthyism, where people who do not believe the official story are branded traitors and kicked to the curb.
While Russia Today might be a vanguard of covering this topic, I still question the nature of their agenda as much as I question the official 9/11 story. However, at least Russia Today is asking the difficult questions or at least giving those who are asking them a platform.
Below are the Russia Today segments related to 9/11 that have been produced in the last year:
