Karl Rove’s Leaky Protection…
|| 10/14/2005 || 6:45 pm || Comments Off on Karl Rove’s Leaky Protection… || ||

This was handed out by Code Pink earlier today outside of the courthouse where Karl Rove was testifying on the Valerie Plame leak case. My friend who gave this to me, along with about 8 others, were dressed up as large condoms. I am not sure if the messanging was effective, but I give them kudos for being creative about the concept of leaking. It is, afterall, somewhat of a stretch, but Rove’s leak- not so much!

Sensors Spatial Analysis of Tularemia on the National Mall
|| 10/6/2005 || 4:47 am || Comments Off on Sensors Spatial Analysis of Tularemia on the National Mall || ||

An attempt at being funny (cartographic humor) using a cute red-eyed rabbit as an icon of the locations of the sensors that found “rabbit fever.”

The other (below) is a quick & dirty spatial analysis of the area around the protests made using NASA’s World Wind (free), Google Earth (free), and Photoshop. I used the measure tool in Google Earth to measure a mile from the Lincoln Memorial, I used World Wind to acquire the USGS imagery, and Photoshop to draw the circles. The Lincoln Memorial’s circle served as the template for the other two sites.

Support Our Ribbons!

My friend Heather Fink posted information about this website: www.supportourribbons.com. For months I’ve been waiting for someone to come up with a parody for these obnoxious car ornaments, and I’m happy that someone has, and did so with the ability for people to make custom ribbons. Pure genius. I’ve already digitally made the ribbon I wanted from the get go!

Store Wars

Because timing is everything, the Organic Trade Association in conjunction with Free Range Graphics, have produced “Store Wars,” to coincide with the release of the final Star Wars film. I remember when “The Meatrix” came out right when the Matrix #2 came out and must say that co-opting the national attention for the advancement of ecologically sound issues is pure genius.

Happy Orgasm Day

for real….

Brazilian Town Celebrates Orgasm Day

Sex rarely makes the news in Brazil’s conservative Northeast – until a small town declared an official Orgasm Day today.

Espertantina Mayor Felipe Santolia endorsed the May 9 holiday, which he said was intended to improve relationships between married couples.

“We’re celebrating orgasm in all its senses. There’s even a panel discussion on premature ejaculation. But from what I’ve seen, women have more trouble achieving orgasm than men, especially in marriage,” Santolia said.

Santolia said the remote town of 38,000 people has been unofficially celebrating orgasm day for years, but that the town’s former mayor had vetoed a bill making it an official municipal holiday.

The city council passed a law on Saturday creating the holiday. Santolia, who took office earlier this year, said he would sign the bill later today.

“I’m 32, single and I have an open mind. Beside the theme is very much of the moment,” he said.

Orgasm Day celebrations include a series of panel discussions by sexologists from across Brazil and a presentation of Eve Ensler’s play The Vagina Monologues.

Santolia said the idea of celebrating Orgasm Day at first created a scandal in the poor region, known for its religious fervour. But he said residents gradually residents warmed to the idea.

“I’ve seen scientific studies that show when a woman is unloved, when her husband can bring her to orgasm, it affects all aspects of her life, her relationships with her children, at home, with the city and at work,” Santolia said.

If I am lucky, I will be celebrating in style tonight :-D

Battle of the Interactive Inaugural Maps

So cartoonist Mark Fiore published his humorous Interactive Inaugural Map on January 20th. After looking at it and laughing, I couldn’t help to wonder if he used my map as some sort of basis for his, so I decided to E-mail him and ask. This is his reply :-)

Thanks, glad you liked my map! Yes, yours kept coming up when I was researching the parade route & getting the DC map together– great work, I’m glad you put that together.

> Mark,
> I really loved your Inaugural Map cartoon! I was wondering if you had seen my interactive inaugural map prior to making your cartoon?
