Park La Brea (Spanish: La Brea – The tar, after the nearby La Brea Tar Pits) is a sprawling apartment complex in the Miracle Mile District of Los Angeles, California. It encompasses more than 4,000 apartments in both high-rise and garden-style buildings, and sits on 160 acres (0.65 km2) of land with numerous lawns. It’s layout is geometric and lends itself to my map style.

Notice how this one isn’t completely symmetrical? Well, in that regards, it was a total mistake! Normally I just scrap the ones that I am not happy with, but I decided to keep this one to simply thrown in some flair to this series.

I decided to make a complete series out of UCLA. It’s not like I have some hidden desire to be at UCLA, rather it was the imagery that was ready to use when I got the hairbrained idea of making 5 prints in a row. Regardless, I am pleased with how they turned out… even the one that didn’t turn out the way I expected (#3).

I’ve had this imagery for a long time but never did anything with it because I felt that the USGS made a poor decision in buying this imagery for the contracting company. Essentially, aerial photography taken in the afternoon (my guess is around 4pm) has large of shadows that obstruct the view of the ground and in my opinion, worthless. Nonetheless, I finally made something of downtown L.A. and as I look at it again, I think the shadows add architectural stitches to the quilt. Geographic Chiaroscuro.
