Lately I’ve been going to Baltimore to work on some tasks and have spent a fair amount of time traversing the streets of old downtown Baltimore. I find the city to have quite a unique character. I enjoy these getaways from DC very much and it’s cheap- only $14 roundtrip on the MARC trains. Cab rides within DC cost more than that!

Mount Vernon is a historic neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland. Included in this area (and above map) is my favorite monument in Baltimore: the Washington Monument. I prepared a derivative tessellation to show more imagery of the monument in the next map. It should look interesting.

Silver Spring Quilt #3

Using a portion of Silver Spring Quilt #1, I made a derivative tessellation and created this fractal map. The “lines” seen above are reflections of the Metro line around the Silver Spring Metro Station.

Up next will a a fractal version. It should look pretty cool :-) It’s too bad that the source aerial photograph was taken so late in the afternoon because the shadows obscure a lot of what’s on the ground.

Annapolis Quilt

I recently noticed that most of the state of Maryland has been released and now I can make the maps a few people have asked about, but was unable to make due to the lack of availability. Today’s map shows the area around the state capital of Maryland.

I’ve actually been to Annapolis a couple times. The last time was in June of 2006 when I went sailing with a friend of mine who’s from the area. The before that was on my 24th birthday in 2004 when a friend randomly picked me up that Sunday afternoon and drove me there on a whim for dinner. I remember getting a kick out of how the map I was making that day eerily looked like an anchor. And finally the first time I went to Annapolis was for a field trip my freshman year a GWU. We got to go on the nuclear submarine, the USS Pittsburgh. That was quite an interesting experience to say the least.

Inner Harbor Fly-Around

Made in the summer of 2005 for a client, this geospatial animation is a fly around of a Lenz projection centered on a high resolution aerial photograph of the Inner Harbor in downtown Baltimore, Maryland

Fort Armistead Park Fly-Around

Created for VJs at the 8th Annual Starscape Music & Arts Festival on June 24th, 2006. This animation uses high-resolution aerial photography of the area around the location of the event and creates a synthetic fly-over similar to Google Earth.

Its nice to take a good healthy spin & zoom….

This is my first animated mandala, and I am quite pleased with the results.

The way the inner harbor is reflected makes this rendering all the more beautiful. There is a small artifact in the center of this image that creates a found focal point that, when printed out, will draw the viewer’s eyes directly to the center of the rendering. This rendering is also the first rendering that I actually made too big! When looking at it’s full 9,000 X 9,000 size, the ground looks slightly fuzzy, yet this is not really a problem! The way I look at it is that I might as well make it as big as possible because I can always shrink it without any degradation. I wonder what I’ll make next!
