This is my fourth rendering of my childhood apartment in Ballwin, Missouri. While I really like the way the quilt looks, shortly after I started the rendering I realized I could have just as easily made this image in Photoshop. The modified imagery I used was the first derivative of the Ballwin Lenz #2 and what I’ve realized is that since the imagery was derived from a previous rendering that already has the axis’s of symmetry embedded within it, the current template will not reflect the imagery to create a noticeable result.

Basically I am trying reflect something that has already been reflected and it is not going to bend anymore unless I modify the first derivative imagery to an extant that the future line of symmetry will be on a seam that I have not used yet. The first derivative used in this rendering was originally reflected at 45 degree intervals (0,45,90,135,180,225,270,and 315 degrees) so for it to be further reflected I need to either rotate the source imagery or reflect the imagery at an angle that divides into 360 evenly and doesn’t fall on the same degrees as the original. My only second derivative work, rotated at 12 degree intervals, but the final result is a bit too busy for my taste. I am really fascinated by this imagery discovery that I’m working on :) Science + Art = Beauty

It’s been awhile since I’ve used some imagery that is not aerial photography! Last night I decided to use one of my favorite satellite images from the “Earth as Art” collection. The colorful original satellite image is of Guinea-Bissau, a small country in West Africa, and the colors represent water and different types of vegetation. I decided to use the ol’ Quilt template to make a somewhat intricate design that has two central axises of symmetry. I genuinely like this rendering and will most likely have it printed shortly.

Somewhat related… When I was setting up the scene to be rendered I realized that I could easily make one of these renderings surpass the gigapixel barrier that I’ve recently read about, but I realized that my computer cannot process that much information. I need a G5!

So the white building near the center of rendering is the USDA Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service building. I’ve been to a few meetings there :)

Georgetown Quilt

This is the first rendering I’ve made with Bryce 5.5 and to be honest I really didn’t notice the rendering speed increase I paid $100 dollars for. Hopefully I’ll notice the speed increase in future renderings.

As for Georgetown Quilt, I really like the way the Key Bridge and the Potmac create the diamond shapes in the rendering. My eyes are drawn to them first! This rendering definitely solidfies my Quilt Project, which means that I need to create a new page on GeoSpatial Art to house these prints…. I’m not going to do that today though, instead I am spending my Memorial Day backing up my renderings. I almost have enough backed up to mail to my mom for safe keeping! Call it a geo-memorial day :-)

The Quilt Project / Minneapolis Quilt

I’ve officially started a new series called the “Quilt Project.” It began with “Ivan Memory,” and the second installation of this series is the rendering above. This is the second rendering using downtown Minneapolis as my subject, and I think this version a lot more subtle in it’s features, but more fun to look at.

Similar to the Lenz Project,” the “Quilt Project” has the ability to incorporate all of the aerial and satellite imagery I’ve acquired over the last few years. This technical aspect of this series is not as interesting as the “Star Of #2” series, but I feel these renderings are absolutely gorgeous. They are so simple, yet so visually engaging, they remind me of futuristic tapestries. These next renderings will be Tapestries of the Earth on a micro scale, that revolve around a center focus and are completely symmetrical. In fact, I think would be beautiful to have them printed out on to a cloth fabric and actually make them into rugs. I wonder if someone would purchase an “Earth Tapestry.” I’ll ask around…

Ivan Memory

Using an aerial photograph from NOAA of Pensacola, Florida taken shortly after Hurricane Ivan, I’ve modified my old “memory” template to produce this rendering. Instead of keeping some background imagery, like in DC Memory, I’ve made this rendering to show only the two primatives used to make the rendering. The result is what I think to be the future of my next renderings (as in expect more renderings in the “memory” series). I really like the way the reflection of the source imagery makes the bridge over the water appear to be an oval. I can’t wait to get this map printed!
