Warning Shots Video
|| 4/26/2005 || 9:55 am || Comments Off on Warning Shots Video || ||

My favorite local producers Thievery Corporation have just released the video for “Warning Shots” off of their new album “The Cosmic Game“. The video was actually filmed across the street from my office in front of the “House of the Temple,” otherwise known as the massive Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Temple on 16th St. The video premiered on MTV2 on Sunday night, and I sincerely hope it gets more airtime because the “The Cosmic Game” CD is one of their best yet. One can listen to their entire CD and not really get a feel for its underlying subversive nature. For instance, I got a bootleg copy of “Amerimakka,” and I loved it from the get-go, but it wasn’t until I obtained the CD and read over the lyrics did I realize 1) the name of the tune 2) what all the lyrics meant 3) how much I liked it after finding out about 1 & 2. Read over the lyrics from “Warning Shots” and then watch the video.

They try their best just to mash up the resistance
Warning shots and sirens from a distance
Riot gear and barricade for an instance
And the words from mi mouth, mi nuh response
Hollywood sending signals of destruction
Stereotype the ghetto youths as the bad man
Overcome the rough times and we grow strong
Step up in a life, now them want to shake we hand

We are eternal, made of the creator
Won’t fall to the soul-less devastators
Divide and conquer, and try to separate us
Up to this day, them still try fi rape us

(If you want to listen to “Warning Shots” but do not want to watch the video, click play on the “Render Radio” in the upper right hand corner of your screen. I’ve had a copy of “Warning Shots” on my website since I picked up the CD.)

Two Years Ago today…

…was Saturday, March 22nd, 2003, and it was the day in which the first protest took place in DC after the invasion of Iraq had commenced. It was also the day that I made my first “newsicvideo” of a protest. Using my tiny, little Canon S200 digital camera, I filmed in 320X240 resolution, I recorded the protest that took place that day. After returning home, I took all the clips (I think there was in upwards of 50 or so) and I sequenced them together in Final Cut Pro and added DJ Shadow‘s “You Can’t Go Home Again” tune to the footage. The final product was a ground-breaking creation because I felt that I finally was able to get my mind around the software, and more importantly I had documented a protest from start to finish. Alas, two years later, we are still in Iraq, and over 1,500 Americans have died and probably over 100,000 Iraqi civilians….

the world in 7200 seconds

After watching 2 hours of international news on Mhz Networkand I change the channel to Fox News just in time to get Shepard Smith’s “the World in 80 Seconds.”

The difference in 7,200 seconds versus 80 seconds is amazing, absolutely amazing.

No mention of the high school students striking all over France…
#update# you can watch the footage here
No mention of the elections in Northern India. ( I saw some of that indelible ink! no purple revolution there!)

No mention of the fire at the Mosque in Tehran which killed 59.

No human viewpoint from the Lebanese who knew the former Prime Minister
(did you see the size of the crater that bomb left? I’ve seen a lot of footage of car bombs in the last few years, but that explosion left a m a s s i v e crater.)

Or about 7120 seconds of real information….

….Saddam Hussein was captured and I made a short, nifty, little video that made fun of the whole process. I guess not much has changed in Iraq over the last year… quagmire just keeps sounding cooler and cooler.

protestor at the rnc & climate change
|| 9/3/2004 || 1:11 am || Comments Off on protestor at the rnc & climate change || ||

Since I was recording the speech, I also recorded a protestor getting escorted out of the convention during Bush’s speech. There was another person who was escorted out as well, but C-Span did film them. I must give those people props for their deep cover operation, but its unfortunate they didn’t make a bigger ruckus. It would have made my night! Nonetheless, I am pleased to see that the convention is over. Its time for political harball…on two more months.

The next major news item will be the hurricane in Florida. I expect to see footage of the Bush boys helping out people who have had their lives changed dramatically by Nature instead of their misguided policies. Well actually their policies might actually be partly responsible. The Republicans (as well as Democrats) have done little to combat climate change in my lifetime. I mean in all honesty climate change is best defined as merely an increase climatic variability, and due to the unprecedented amount of CO2 in our atmosphere, its happening right the moment. So expect more hurricanes, monsoons, droughts, floods, and tornados. And look for politicians to be on the scene to console families, but don’t expect any policies that will help combat the issue, just a good photo-op for the newspapers (which will not be recycled).

This is an digital adaptation of a picture I took of painting at the GWU Marvin Center. I ended up using it as the closing frame for the GWU Bhangra Blowout intro video I made.

It was ultimately viewed by 4,000 people in a sold out D.A.R. Hall.

I tweaked CNN’s footage of George Bush’s Veterans Day speech using Final Cut Pro with some photographs that I supplied.
