Designed Two New Shirts

Earlier this month as a birthday present to myself I decided to design two new shirts for myself. The shirt design on top contains the emblem from the 1622 edition of Kepler’s Mysterium cosmographicum which says Gloria Immortalis Labore Parta. The other shirt design is of a little girl from a random newspaper advertisement from 1905 who kind of look like the Morton Salt girl. I think a present for Christmas is in the works :-)

Give Me Some %20 (space) – An HTML Code T-Shirt Design

Following in the same vein as my previous code-based t-shirts, this iteration uses the HTML character code for the spacebar, %20, as a figure of speech. Oftentimes when someone gives you a URL that includes a space between the characters, there is an automatic %20 that gets inserted. For example, https://nikolasschiller.com/example/this is awesome.jpg would automatically be converted to https://nikolasschiller.com/example/this%20is%20awesome.jpg because spaces in URLs are actually the HTML character code %20. Therefore the shirt above can be read two different ways: give me some space or give me some %20. For those without the basic understand of HTML, they’ll probably want to know what %20 is– a tax, a new band, 1/5 of something, etc. and for those who understand HTML, maybe they might take a step back.

A D.C. protester garbles the garb
Tuesday, November 24, 2009

Nikolas Schiller seems to lack a clear understanding of the history of the District of Columbia [“Hats off to D.C. statehood,” the Reliable Source, Nov. 19]. He wears “Colonial” garb to make the point that, in his words, “the status of D.C. residents has not changed since Colonial times.” But there was, of course, no District of Columbia in colonial times. There was a city of Georgetown, in Maryland.

Mr. Schiller also needs a new costume consultant. His coat is cut incorrectly, and I hope he doesn’t really wear German lederhosen, as he said, but rather correctly cut knee breeches when he isn’t wearing blue jeans.

The Adidas World Map and the Adidas Map of the Western Hemisphere

As I mentioned in my last entry I went to the Adidas store in Georgetown last night. While I was looking through the clothing on the various racks, I spotted these two map related t-shirts. They use the Adidas logo as the texture of the surface of the earth. Unlike Express clothing’s cartographic t-shirts, this time around I actually looked at where the shirts were made. The location and the Adidas map of the Western Hemisphere are below the fold:

At the beginning of this month I noticed a dude at the 18th Street Lounge wearing the t-shirt above and I asked him where he got it. To my dismay he said he purchased it at the Express Clothing Store at his nearby mall. While I liked the shirt (a lot!) I was saddened to know that it was probably made in a sweatshop.

I didn’t ask the dude to take a look at the shirt’s tag, which would have shown the country of origin, but I know from experience that most of the clothing at Express and other clothing shops in the mall tend to be made in sweatshops around the world. A couple years ago I made a pact with myself to not purchase clothing that I knew was manufactured in a sweatshop, so don’t expect me to run out and buy this shirt.

In the three weeks since I started preparing this entry I noticed that the two other shirts which had cartographic representations on them have already been deaccessioned from the Express website. The link above should bring you to the same graphic t-shirt but in a different color. The two t-shirts shown below the fold are not available anymore on-line but might still be for sale at a nearby store. Thats if you are down with sweatshops and all…

I’ve known about the store for some time now so it’s nice that it’s is getting some great exposure in today’s Washington Post article. The store is located near the intersection of 18th & Columbia NW below the Starbucks and should open soon. I’ve written about my antics & activism with. Adam over the years- from working on his last campaign for U.S. Shadow Representative to staging the first ever DC democracy lobbying effort on the Potomac and I’m looking forward to shopping at Capitol Hemp.

the world is you, a fashion experiment

On Monday I purchased the printable T-shirt transfers from Staples, on Tuesday I went to American Apparel to buy two shirts, and today I made my first geospatial fashion design (above, using the graphics from “Ball of Destruction“). I ended up wearing it to ESL and got a lot of great feedback from random people :) If I am able to secure the wholesale prices from American Apparel I’d like to make an entire line of clothing. I’m still trying to parse out the interesting and unique ways I’d be able to design the clothing, but I think what I made is a positive start. Got a t-shirt idea? Leave me a comment!

This shirt somehow ended up being mentioned in the Washington Post article “Here Be Dragons” by David Montgomery.
