America as a Cloverleaf

America as a Cloverleaf by Nikolas Schiller

View the original, interactive version, and legend:

This historic map mashup is courtesy of Heinrich Bunting (1545-1606) by way of the Yale University Map Library.

Originally the three cloverleaves were of Africa (South/Middle) , Europe (West/Left), and Asia (East/Right) and at the center was Jerusalem. You can read more about this map at the website Strange Maps.

My rendition is San Francisco’s Financial District (West/Left), the Saint Louis Arch (South), and Lower Manhattan (East/Right) and at the center is the rowhouse in Washington, DC where I reside at.

Street View Improvised Explosive Device by Nikolas Schiller

So the other day I mentioned I was working on a mash-up for Google’s new Street View feature.

The result is the first google bomb for Street View— an improvised explosive device, with a message called Street View I.E.D..

LOLmaps

So last week I mentioned I was working on a new project and after working on it for the last 4 days or so I have nearly completed my latest cartographic creation: LOLmaps

There is still some work to do on the project, but I am quite pleased with how it has turned out thus far. It currently uses the same design as the Lost Series, and I’d ultimately like to code a sequential version, but for now I am enjoying the randomness. After the first revision of the project, I now have a handy-dandy legend for the maps (aka I added numbers to corresponding maps) which explains the background of the project, gives the translations, and locates the maps I have created thus far. But there is still a few more tasks to do before I’d say it’s a completed project (like a Google Map Mashup). Regardless, I am curious as to how the project will be received.

Park Circle Quilt – Interactive

Park Circle Quilt - Interactive by Nikolas Schiller

I took the 9,000 x 6,000 version (one half the original) of Park Circle Quilt reduced it in size one half (to 4,500 x 3,000), then doubled the width by copying the quilt (final dimensions: 9,000 x 3,000). Using the program Make Cubic I made a Quicktime Virtual Reality environment of the location. It’s about 20 megabytes so be patient while it downloads.

Temporal Stereography of Schiller Park, Illinois

Tessellations of Time
Schiller Park Quilt 2002 || Schiller Park Quilt 2005

Some locations around the United States have high-resolution, color, aerial photography available from two specific periods of time, some entire states have none. Washington, DC has imagery of 2002 and 2005, however the 2005 imagery has not been released to public (I’m still waiting to see if NO WAR shows up on my roof!). All of my DC maps use the Feb 2002 imagery. Google currently uses imagery of Washington, DC that was taken probably in March or April of 2002 because the Mandarin Oriental Hotel is still semi-completed in both sets of imagery.

Chicago, on the other hand, also has available imagery taken in April of 2002 and April of 2005. So I obtained both years for the Village of Schiller Park, Illinois, which is located right outside of Chicago’s O’Hare airport. When preparing the imagery I made sure that they were identical tessellations, differing only in acquisition date. I attempted to match the tone as best as I could.

The idea behind this process was that when printed and hung next to each other, they would create a rudimentary stereoscopic projection that would look largely similar, but with temporal artifacts showing change in the built environment.

The one regret is rendering the maps at 9K x 6K instead of the normal 18K x 12K, I would have captured more detail from the source aerial photography. But aside from that, I am going to make more of these temporal diptychs when the imagery is available. I think it’s a unique method of showing time, space, place, and symmetry.

Ironically, even though both sets of imagery present Schiller Park in the recent past, those of you in Chicago are technically seeing the future, because Google will most likely update their servers with the same imagery I’m using. So in reality, you are looking at a map of the future!

Left = 2002 || Right = 2005

Look closely and watch time bend.

Battle of the Interactive Inaugural Maps

So cartoonist Mark Fiore published his humorous Interactive Inaugural Map on January 20th. After looking at it and laughing, I couldn’t help to wonder if he used my map as some sort of basis for his, so I decided to E-mail him and ask. This is his reply :-)

Thanks, glad you liked my map! Yes, yours kept coming up when I was researching the parade route & getting the DC map together– great work, I’m glad you put that together.

> Mark,
> I really loved your Inaugural Map cartoon! I was wondering if you had seen my interactive inaugural map prior to making your cartoon?
