My Record Cover Was Featured On Current TV Last Night
|| 11/12/2009 || 1:47 pm || 1 Comment Rendered || ||

Last night a friend of mine from college, Andrew Wiseman, left a message on my Facebook wall saying that he saw the map I made on Current TV. Knowing that I had met the film crew back in June of this year at the 18th Street Lounge, I was expecting the show to eventually broadcast. Earlier today the full show was uploaded to YouTube:

Around 18 minutes into the episode, while Eric Hilton and Rob Garza of Thievery Corporation are at the record shop Som Records (about 4 blocks from my house), Rob picks up the record Supreme Illusion, which I licensed Pentagon Quilt and Lower Manhattan Quilt as the cover artwork.

If you don’t want to watch the entire show, you can skip to 50 second mark on this truncated version of the show:

YouTube video of the Billionaires for Wealthcare singing “Public Option Annie” at yesterday’s AHIP conference in Washington, DC
|| 10/24/2009 || 8:19 pm || + Render A Comment || ||

This video was filmed at AHIP‘s 14th annual State Issues Conference at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington, DC. I think the activist singers did an excellent job conveying the message of the importance of a public option in any health insurance reform.

AHIP is the powerful insurance lobby that spends 5 million dollars a week trying to kill health care reform. Billionaires for Wealthcare is a grassroots network looking to stop them – with song.

  • AHIP and other insurance and HMO interests spend nearly $5 million per week undermining real health care reform, including a public option.
  • AHIP has resorted to out-right lying and scare tactics to block health care reform. They sent letters that lie to seniors about what health care reform means for Medicare, and they issued a report on the costs of health care reform legislation that is so misleading even the reports embarrassed authors distanced themselves from the way AHIP used their work.
  • Every year, 45,000 people die because they cant get access to the health care they need. Yet AHIP continues to stand in the way of health care reform that would provide coverage to millions of Americans because the industry is more concerned with protecting profits than saving lives.

Lyrics to “Public Option Annie” sung in the tune of “Tomorrow” from the Broadway musical Annie.

Johnny Osbourne – Truths And Rights (1979)

A tacky fan video featuring the song “Truths And Rights” by Johnny Osbourne

I think this song might qualify as the official song for this blog. With the opening phrase “Render your arms and not your garments,” it clearly has a home in the archives of this website which I’ve called The Daily Render for nearly five years now…..

Below are the lyrics of Truths And Rights by Johnny Osbourne:

Render your arms and not your garments
The truth is there for who have eyes to see
Partiality has no place in this judgment
Remember the words of prophecy

Chorus:
Children, run come the truths and rights
That’s what I’m about
You know the truths and rights
Teach it to the children
You know the truths and rights
Teach it to the children
Cause they should know
know know know know

Children say a little prayer
Every night before you go to sleep
Cause tomorrow is promised to no one
When you think it’s peace and safety, Lord
It could be, it could be sudden destruction
Cause we know, yes we know

Remember I say this few words to you
Remember the words I’m saying to you right now
And for tomorrow and hence for I say

Render your hearts and not your garments
The truth is there for who have eyes to see
Partiality has no place in this judgment
Remember the words of prophecy

Chorus:
Children, run come the truths and rights
That’s what I’m about
You know the truths and rights
Teach it to the children
You know the truths and rights
Teach it to the children
Cause they should know
know know know know

Signs of the Time: Michael Jackson
|| 6/30/2009 || 4:45 pm || + Render A Comment || ||

Although this is a few days late, on June 25th, the night of Michael Jackson’s death, I was at Restaurant Marvin, (ironically named after another dead musician) in Washington, DC projecting old Michael Jackson videos on the wall of the adjacent building and this yahoo showed up at the bar. I couldn’t help but laughing at the crude nature of the sign. I understand we all experience loss in different ways, but showing up at a bar with a sign is a bit silly.

YouTube video of the early years of Disco in the Washington / Baltimore area from 1976
|| 6/1/2009 || 2:41 pm || + Render A Comment || ||

This video was created by Tom D’Antoni in 1976 for Maryland Public Broadcasting‘s show “The Critic’s Place” on the Disco phenomenon when it was happening. It shows some of the nightclubs that existed in Washington, DC and Baltimore during the early years of Disco. I really enjoyed how Tom highlighted the social differences that existed between DC and Baltimore 30 years ago and how they, in some ways, still exist today. I am really curious about where the clubs that were featured in the video were located. At about 4 minutes in he mentions 20th & L streets and that area is now all office buildings. I gotta wonder if there are any nightclubs in the locations shown in the video that still exist today?

A big thanks goes to Dori Hadar, who posted this on Facebook, and is the person we can collectively thank for helping to discover Mingering Mike. You can purchase his insightful book about Mingering Mike on Amazon.

Note: while the YouTube video’s title says “Disco 1975 (74?),” upon a thorough reading of the comments posted on YouTube, audiophiles were able to accurately place the video at 1976.

UPDATE – 2/28/2011 – The Sagittarius, shown at the opening and again at around the 2 minute mark, was located inside of the Fraser Mansion and is currently the national affairs office of the Church of Scientology. -via DCist.

I’ve been a fan of Natalia’s for a couple of years now and always enjoy her songs. Check her MySpace or Facebook for more information. If you haven’t yet, pick up her most recent CD “Nectar”. I’m told she’s currently in Washington, DC recording songs for her next album.

Today I went down to the National Mall to check out the opening ceremonies of the Inauguration of Barack Obama. I twittered that I had never seen the Mall so full! While I didn’t really catch much of the concert it was quite cool seeing so many people on the Mall.

I am still getting used to Head-Roc‘s performing with a rock & roll band, but I like it. It shows Head-Roc’s sincere talent as one of the best musicians in Washington, DC.

Art Whino Films presents the art of Daniel Fleres

This video was filmed on the evening that I went to the Adidas store in Georgetown. The music is the dub mix of “One Time” by DJ Thomas Blondet and I believe the vocalist is Rootz, who performs with Thievery Corporation and SEE-I . At the end of the video street artists Mark Jenkins and DECOY make appearances. I tried to see if I was in the video, but I think the editors left me on the cutting room floor.

Video of “Dub Prices” by Hutchy
|| 9/19/2008 || 11:30 pm || Comments Off on Video of “Dub Prices” by Hutchy || ||

Last month I posted Hutchy’s video of “Gas Prices” and today he released the video of the Gas Prices’ B side called “Dub Prices.” The dub sound consists predominantly of instrumental remixes of existing recordings and is created by significantly manipulating and reshaping the recordings, usually by removing the vocals from an existing music piece, emphasizing the drum and bass frequencies or ‘riddim’, adding extensive echo and reverb effects, and dubbing occasional snippets of lyrics from the original version. In regards to “Dub Prices,” the chorus can still be heard throughout the song, but the vocals have been removed in place of a more “dubbed out” sound. The video takes some of the funnier parts of the first video (like “I <3 Dub”) and mixes it up for one cute video. I especially like the visual reverb effect that the director uses near the end.
