My Record Cover Was Featured On Current TV Last Night
|| 11/12/2009 || 1:47 pm || 1 Comment Rendered || ||

Last night a friend of mine from college, Andrew Wiseman, left a message on my Facebook wall saying that he saw the map I made on Current TV. Knowing that I had met the film crew back in June of this year at the 18th Street Lounge, I was expecting the show to eventually broadcast. Earlier today the full show was uploaded to YouTube:

Around 18 minutes into the episode, while Eric Hilton and Rob Garza of Thievery Corporation are at the record shop Som Records (about 4 blocks from my house), Rob picks up the record Supreme Illusion, which I licensed Pentagon Quilt and Lower Manhattan Quilt as the cover artwork.

If you don’t want to watch the entire show, you can skip to 50 second mark on this truncated version of the show:

Johnny Osbourne – Truths And Rights (1979)

A tacky fan video featuring the song “Truths And Rights” by Johnny Osbourne

I think this song might qualify as the official song for this blog. With the opening phrase “Render your arms and not your garments,” it clearly has a home in the archives of this website which I’ve called The Daily Render for nearly five years now…..

Below are the lyrics of Truths And Rights by Johnny Osbourne:

Render your arms and not your garments
The truth is there for who have eyes to see
Partiality has no place in this judgment
Remember the words of prophecy

Chorus:
Children, run come the truths and rights
That’s what I’m about
You know the truths and rights
Teach it to the children
You know the truths and rights
Teach it to the children
Cause they should know
know know know know

Children say a little prayer
Every night before you go to sleep
Cause tomorrow is promised to no one
When you think it’s peace and safety, Lord
It could be, it could be sudden destruction
Cause we know, yes we know

Remember I say this few words to you
Remember the words I’m saying to you right now
And for tomorrow and hence for I say

Render your hearts and not your garments
The truth is there for who have eyes to see
Partiality has no place in this judgment
Remember the words of prophecy

Chorus:
Children, run come the truths and rights
That’s what I’m about
You know the truths and rights
Teach it to the children
You know the truths and rights
Teach it to the children
Cause they should know
know know know know

Neda, Haile Selassie, and Rootz

I took this photograph last week in the Green Room at the 18th Street Lounge. It features my gorgeous friend Neda, a tapestry of Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, and Rootz, one of the lead singers of the band SEE-I. What can I say? The photo made me smile.

[Update] The Architectural Athan Drum & Bass Mashup via YouTube Doubler is now transcribed
|| 4/19/2009 || 10:36 am || 1 Comment Rendered || ||

Click image to view the mashup on YouTube Doubler

Just under one year ago I created an interesting mashup using Brian Kane’s YouTube Doubler. Dubbed “the Athan Drum & Bass Mashup” (and since then I’ve added “architectural” to the title), the mashup features a slideshow of Islamic architecture on the left side and a stationary camera focused on a Drum & Bass DJ’s turntables on the right. Last night I revisited the original entry and discovered that whomever had uploaded the slideshow decided to transcribe the Athan using YouTube’s annotation feature. Now you can actually read the English translation of the morning call to prayer sung in Arabic.

#update – This iteration also automatically rewinds!

Art Whino Films presents the art of Daniel Fleres

This video was filmed on the evening that I went to the Adidas store in Georgetown. The music is the dub mix of “One Time” by DJ Thomas Blondet and I believe the vocalist is Rootz, who performs with Thievery Corporation and SEE-I . At the end of the video street artists Mark Jenkins and DECOY make appearances. I tried to see if I was in the video, but I think the editors left me on the cutting room floor.

Video of “Gas Prices” by Hutchy
|| 8/4/2008 || 10:37 am || Comments Off on Video of “Gas Prices” by Hutchy || ||

Two weeks ago I ran into Hutchy outside of Wonderland Ballroom here in DC. I was there for the monthly Funk DC party. Hutchy gave me the CD and said “This iz da fresh shit mon,” which I laughed at because anytime someone gives you their CD it’s always the freshest in their head. I put it my pocket for the rest of the night and left it on my dresser until last Saturday afternoon. I popped it in my CD player and actually enjoyed the track. I think I liked it so much because this reggae tune takes on a few contemporary issues that are important to people; namely gas prices, corporate control, and the mortgage crisis.

This morning I got word via my RSS from Brian Liu that ToolboxDC, a creative firm owned & operated by a couple of my friends, had made a video of the tune (below). It was directed by my friend Robin, who I’ve mentioned here before and it features some bicycle riding, scenes from around Washington, DC, and a bunch of cameos from my friends- including one of the DJs who I saw the night Hutchy gave me the cd!

For more information on Hutchy, check out his record label Ruffcut Records or his MySpace page.

The Athan Drum & Bass Mashup via YouTube Doubler
|| 4/24/2008 || 11:00 pm || Comments Off on The Athan Drum & Bass Mashup via YouTube Doubler || ||

The other day I wrote about Brian Kane’s YouTube Doubler. Continuing on the same style of taking a beat track and adding a new element, today’s mash-up is similar to one that I made before using dub reggae back in December of 2004. Unlike the last version, which was created before YouTube even existed, this mashup features the Muslim call to prayer, known as the Athan, combined with a very techy drum & bass mix.

First and foremost, if you are reading this and are offended by my use of the Athan, I apologize. It is not my intent to debase or make fun of the Athan in any way, rather this mashup was designed to expose others to different ways of hearing the Muslim call to prayer. One of the fundamental tenets of Islam is tolerance and I hope you are able to tolerate this mashup. Drum & bass is very abrasive form of electronic music and the Athan is normally sung without any instrumentation, so I feel it’s an interesting sonic juxtaposition.

What I like most about the Athan video is that it features mosques from around the world. So not only do you get to hear the beauty of the call to prayer, you are shown the beauty of Islamic architecture as well. If you are interested in seeing/hearing a different Athan, check out the call to prayer being sung inside of a al-Masjid al-Haram mosque in Mecca. It’s the holiest site in all of Islam.
