A Gigapan of the 105 & 110 Quilt

After uploading yesterday’s map to Gigapan, I realized that most of my maps on the website are not really panoramas. They were big files, but not wide panoramas, so I decided to make a special map that looks more like a panorama. To do this, I found the map 105 & 110 Quilt in my archives and opened it up. Then I increased the size of the canvas by a factor of 3 to 27,000 pixels wide and added two more copies of the map in the new space. Finally I saved it and uploaded it. I could easily do this with the rest of the Los Angeles Interchanges Series, but I think one example is enough for the time being. I would have made it larger, but my computer can only handle files 30,000 pixels or smaller. Maybe if I were to use a different computer with more ram and more hard drive space I could actually make a GIGApan.

Notice how this one isn’t completely symmetrical? Well, in that regards, it was a total mistake! Normally I just scrap the ones that I am not happy with, but I decided to keep this one to simply thrown in some flair to this series.

I decided to make a complete series out of UCLA. It’s not like I have some hidden desire to be at UCLA, rather it was the imagery that was ready to use when I got the hairbrained idea of making 5 prints in a row. Regardless, I am pleased with how they turned out… even the one that didn’t turn out the way I expected (#3).

Harvard Quilt – NE

A friend of mine that I have been spending a lot of time with lately graduated from Harvard a few years ago. When I told her that I was going to make a map of Harvard she showed me which dorm she lived in. When I set up the tessellation I tried my best to place her dorm, the Dunster House, near the seam on the NE & NW tessellations. The SE & SW tessellations placed her dorm on the edges of the tessellation, so I haven’t got around to making those two maps yet, but I plan on it.

One of my favorite aspects of my map making activities is seeing how the final product turns out. Where will the seams line up? What buildings will get reflected along a line of symmetry? What part of the map will be the most beautiful? Will I find a random reflection? etc. etc. It turns out that this map and the following map, have her former dorm placed beautifully. I also broke away from the standard 2 / 3 / 4 seamed maps, and made 6 seamed map, and I must say that I very happy with how this map turned out. Check the details to see what I’m talking about!
