Park La Brea Quilt by Nikolas Schiller

Park La Brea (Spanish: La Brea – The tar, after the nearby La Brea Tar Pits) is a sprawling apartment complex in the Miracle Mile District of Los Angeles, California. It encompasses more than 4,000 apartments in both high-rise and garden-style buildings, and sits on 160 acres (0.65 km2) of land with numerous lawns. It’s layout is geometric and lends itself to my map style.

Salt Lake City Quilt with Clouds
|| 12/28/2005 || 7:34 pm || 2 Comments Rendered || ||

: rendered at 12,000 X 8,000 :

After over 28 hours of rendering time, this map finally finished up and I am very happy with the results. The merger of the natural (clouds) with that of the synthetic (tessellation) real (aerial photography) makes this one of my most unique maps to date.

The clouds, while not creating much of a natural shadow on the ground, look very realistic with different thicknesses and densities. To create these clouds I placed two large spheres on the left side of the scene and used the pre-made texture of “cotton balls” (I think?) to give them density and depth. I think I will start making more of this type of rendering in 2006.

However, while beautiful, these clouds take much more processing power to create because all of the shadows must be accounted for and in the 3D world the clouds take up a lot of space that needs to be calculated when ray tracing.

The last time I made something with clouds, after a 3 days of rendering a power failure was what ended the rendering (yet since it was 50% finished, I was able to reflect half of it, and salvaged the rendering– if you look closely, there is a face!).

Point being, this process is very slow and if I am to be making more of these my cycle of near daily renderings will be delayed to maybe one per week. I don’t mind this per se, but I’d rather have more than less maps at the end of 2006.

This progression session is one of constant revision and manipulation and as the Quilt Project has progressed from flattened spheres to infinite planes, I have attempted to better understand what exactly I’ve been creating and with this map I feel I made something that is truly post-modern and I must say that I am very excited about what the next map will be!

Beverly Hills Quilt #4

: rendered at 18,000 X 12,000 :

This is the final rendering of the series and I like it best. Comare it to Beverly Hills Quilt #2, which this rendering is the “inverse” of.

Comparing this to #1, this “inverse” rendering shows how the confluence of the streets (basically Wilshire) nicely. There isn’t much else to say since this is the 3rd one of the series. Up next, who would have guessed? Yes that is right. #4.

Beverly Hills Quilt #2

: rendered at 18,000 X 12,000 :

I simply took the 4 planes of Beverly Hills Quilt #1, duplicated them and rotated it 45 degrees.

I really like the diamond shape of the roads (as mentioned before).

Up next will be the “inverse” of Beverly Hills Quilt #1. I think it should be pretty cool looking….

I have a cursory hypothesis that NE to SE and NW to SW transfers create the exact inverse when tessellated- I should know this by now!

Beverly Hills Quilt

: rendered at 18,000 X 12,000 :

In the last few weeks I’ve found that a lot of my friends & acquaintances from my high school are now living in Southern California. When I discovered that my girlfriend from 8th grade was living in Buena Park, California, I decided to make some renderings to celebrate the reconnection. While I don’t know any friends living in Beverly Hills, I know that many long to live there! I also know that most people know a bit more about Beverly Hills compared to Buena Park….I do, sorta.

The main geographic identifier in this rendering is Wilshire Blvd.- take a look at this google map to give yourself a better idea of location. I can tell that contained in the rendering is Beverly Hills City Hall, Spago, Rodeo Dr., and quite a few other places that people who live in the area know more about…maybe they can fill me in.

Since there is interesting arrangement of houses in the area and the confluence of State Highway 2, Wilshire Blvd, and Rexford Ave. makes a nice triangle, I decided to create two different versions of the source imagery- one used in this print (and the next one too) and one that is an “inverse”. To use the meta-mosaic terminology I came up with before, this map’s source imagery has the geographic truth in the SE corner and the inverse source imagery (yet to be used, after #2 is finished) has the geographic truth located in the NW corner. When #2 is finished, I am going to switch it up for comparison purposes, it should look cool :-)
