Dodgers Stadium Quilt - 2004 by Nikolas Schiller

I made two tessellations of the Los Angeles Dodgers stadium. One from the 2004 imagery and one from the 2006 imagery. Of note is that Google Maps is currently using the 2006 imagery (it looks like the seats had been taken out of the stadium and were placed in the parking lot). The problem with the 2004 dataset of LA is that the flyover was done in the afternoon and the shadows obscure much of the ground. The best example of this is Los Angeles Quilt, which shows downtown but with too many shadows.

RFK Quilt #3

The RFK Stadium maps have been quite popular with sports fans. The original two feature the stadium set up for soccer, but since the original aerial photograph was taken in 2005 the stadium shows a baseball diamond where the Washington Nationals play. Like the previous two, I rotated the source imagery 45 degrees so that the tessellation had the East Capitol Street bridge creating an X in the center. However, unlike the previous two, this source aerial photograph was taken at .16 meters per pixel and did not allow the area around the stadium to fit into the standard size I use for all my tessellations without losing the source spatial quality. Regardless, I am very pleased with this map! Stadium clusters….

Eastern Market Quilt #3

Earlier this week the historic Eastern Market building burned down. I decided to make another map in it’s memory. I made 4 different tessellations before settling on one that placed the building on a line of symmetry. I really like the way Pennsylvania Ave. creates the star design!

1,423 maps now greet visitors

Using the same php script that I have been using for the lost series, this morning I changed up the intro page on my website. The php script was placed in the folder that contains every single map, detail, and zoom-in on my website (as well as some random maps I forgot that I had placed in the folder!), so each time a visitor comes to my website’s splash page they are greeted randomly by one of 1,423 (and counting) images.

I’ve changed it up because I found a lot of people visited the old splash page, but never clicked on the image to enter the website. This modification poses a question to the viewer “You’ve found my website, but can you find the image below?” which is a friendly way of saying, “Look around!”

Continuing on the observations I made before, one thing I have noticed is that people very rarely explore my website. They check the front page, but thats about it. Maybe this new intro page might foster some more exploration.
