Providence Quilt

: rendered at 18,000 X 12,000 :

So I am totally on a kick now of making new maps using imagery from outside of DC. Today is Providence, Rhode Island, a city I have yet to visit. Tomorrow will be Houston, Texas, and hopefully the following two will be of Philly & Salt Lake City. So far I’ve only prepared the imagery for Houston and I need to mosaic & square the new imagery I acquired this evening. As for the Providence Quilt, there are a few interesting geographic identifiers that make this rendering all the more exquisite. The capital building is reflected numerous times within the map, but I really like the way the river & roads show up. Lately I’ve been enjoying the ways in which reflected highways make beautiful aspects of the tessellations, and I think the Houston map coming up next will be a great example.

This is the first rendering I’ve made using the Lincoln Memorial as the subject. When creating the source imagery I took a different approach to setting up the geographic tessellation. I first rotated imagery 45 degrees and from that I cut out the Lincoln Memorial. I paid careful attention so that the refelection pool created a central X in the imagery. While the 6 seamed quilt template is not new, this method of source imagery creation is, and I am very happy with the result and will probably employ this method again in the future.

So I have made quite a few quilt renderings lately. To be honest, these multi-planar maps are my favorite to make, and because of this, I tend to make more them compared to the rest of the projections I’ve worked on.

Beginning with this rendering, I am going to relate the star of to education (be the star of your school!), and the next few will be dedicated to schools. Up next is Woodson High School in Washington, DC and following that will be my alma mater, Marquette High School. Ideally, I’d like to donate prints of these to the schools.

I like this rendering, but the way I setup the lighting is not the way I wanted it to look. Its far too bleached out at the center… and well, I’ve never liked the colors in this imagery in the first place. The reason why this took place is because I saved the template file after making the last mandala rendering, the Buena Park Mandala. Oh well.

I really don’t dig how this one turned out. It’s too dark for my taste and you can’t really see much detail in the final product. I do like the other Buena Park renderings much better.

I need to get some new imagery because I’m not very happy with what has been rendered recently. I think it boils down to needing a new template that reflects my current emotions a bit more. And well, it’s quite ironic that the Buena Park imagery does has a roller coaster inside of it :-) But really, I want to start using some more human figures and new perspectives. I like that…new perspectives on the world, because, after all, that is what I’m creating isn’t it?

Over projected, but looks nice. more later….

…later has arrived.

I think its interesting that this rendering is probably one of the smallest in pixel size. I think it will look great printed out. Flora Buena…

This rendering is an example of found imagery. An old friend gave me her address in Buena Park, California and on a whim I downloaded the aerial photography of her neighborhood. A few weeks later I decided to open up the TIFF file and prepare it for a rendering. And then a few days later I finally used the imagery in a rendering. Is it found or just delayed? Regardless, it looks cool to me :-)

I truly love the way suburban houses resemble watersheds, albeit square instead of fluid. I would say this rendering and the Mall Quilt are currently my favorite Quilt renderings.

This entry has a better zoom of the center, even though it only has two lines of symmetry.

Quilt of Guinea-Bissau

: full size print, rendered at 12,000 X 8,000 :

It’s been awhile since I’ve used some imagery that is not aerial photography! Last night I decided to use one of my favorite satellite images from the “Earth as Art” collection. The colorful original satellite image is of Guinea-Bissau, a small country in West Africa, and the colors represent water and different types of vegetation. I decided to use the ol’ Quilt template to make a somewhat intricate design that has two central axises of symmetry. I genuinely like this rendering and will most likely have it printed shortly.

Somewhat related… When I was setting up the scene to be rendered I realized that I could easily make one of these renderings surpass the gigapixel barrier that I’ve recently read about, but I realized that my computer cannot process that much information. I need a G5!
