My Artist Talk At The Old Print Gallery

background map: Park La Brea Quilt #2

Yesterday, Friday, October 15th, I gave an artist talk at the Old Print Gallery in conjunction with my exhibition. The screen grab above is from a special opening slide that I made for the talk. Its the first HTML page that I have used the auto-refresh tag. It was designed to cycle through different maps every 10 seconds before the lecture began. I might add this feature to the front page of the website now that I see that it works. The talk lasted a little over an hour and included a brief Q & A at the end. Thank you to everyone who came.

Below are the “slides” that I used for my presentation and most are hyperlinked to their original entries:

Read my brief comments about USC in my previous entry.

Of note, is that after posting the last map I looked at the number of maps I’ve made of Los Angeles and realized that I have enough for a 2008 Calendar! I will definitely put one together in time for this Christmas season. And after even further review, I actually have enough maps for a series of different calendars- DC, California, Texas, various universities, and fractals. :-)

This is the final rendering of the series and I like it best. Comare it to Beverly Hills Quilt #2, which this rendering is the “inverse” of.

Comparing this to #1, this “inverse” rendering shows how the confluence of the streets (basically Wilshire) nicely. There isn’t much else to say since this is the 3rd one of the series. Up next, who would have guessed? Yes that is right. #4.

Beverly Hills Quilt

: rendered at 18,000 X 12,000 :

In the last few weeks I’ve found that a lot of my friends & acquaintances from my high school are now living in Southern California. When I discovered that my girlfriend from 8th grade was living in Buena Park, California, I decided to make some renderings to celebrate the reconnection. While I don’t know any friends living in Beverly Hills, I know that many long to live there! I also know that most people know a bit more about Beverly Hills compared to Buena Park….I do, sorta.

The main geographic identifier in this rendering is Wilshire Blvd.- take a look at this google map to give yourself a better idea of location. I can tell that contained in the rendering is Beverly Hills City Hall, Spago, Rodeo Dr., and quite a few other places that people who live in the area know more about…maybe they can fill me in.

Since there is interesting arrangement of houses in the area and the confluence of State Highway 2, Wilshire Blvd, and Rexford Ave. makes a nice triangle, I decided to create two different versions of the source imagery- one used in this print (and the next one too) and one that is an “inverse”. To use the meta-mosaic terminology I came up with before, this map’s source imagery has the geographic truth in the SE corner and the inverse source imagery (yet to be used, after #2 is finished) has the geographic truth located in the NW corner. When #2 is finished, I am going to switch it up for comparison purposes, it should look cool :-)

Buena Park Quilt by Nikolas Schiller

This rendering is an example of found imagery. An old friend gave me her address in Buena Park, California and on a whim I downloaded the aerial photography of her neighborhood. A few weeks later I decided to open up the TIFF file and prepare it for a rendering. And then a few days later I finally used the imagery in a rendering. Is it found or just delayed? Regardless, it looks cool to me :-)

I truly love the way suburban houses resemble watersheds, albeit square instead of fluid. I would say this rendering and the Mall Quilt are currently my favorite Quilt renderings.

This entry has a better zoom of the center, even though it only has two lines of symmetry.

Quilt of Guinea-Bissau

: full size print, rendered at 12,000 X 8,000 :

It’s been awhile since I’ve used some imagery that is not aerial photography! Last night I decided to use one of my favorite satellite images from the “Earth as Art” collection. The colorful original satellite image is of Guinea-Bissau, a small country in West Africa, and the colors represent water and different types of vegetation. I decided to use the ol’ Quilt template to make a somewhat intricate design that has two central axises of symmetry. I genuinely like this rendering and will most likely have it printed shortly.

Somewhat related… When I was setting up the scene to be rendered I realized that I could easily make one of these renderings surpass the gigapixel barrier that I’ve recently read about, but I realized that my computer cannot process that much information. I need a G5!
