The National Gruntledness Index
|| 3/21/2008 || 10:48 am || Comments Off on The National Gruntledness Index || ||

This map of the United States is Careerbuilder’s “definitive measure of career happiness.” While I think the map’s concept is cute, the means in which the colors are displayed make the map more comical than helpful. My screen grab above is a static picture but on the website the map is slightly animated which creates these bands of ‘gruntledness’ that are impossible (look at West Virginia’s colored band uniting with Ohio). Yet if you ignore this aspect, the point of the map becomes evident; it’s simply a promotional tool to bring people to Career Builder’s website. Maybe it’s time I start looking for a 9 to 5 job– it’s been about two years since I’ve been in an office.

Map of the Languages of Europe

The Languages of Europe

Following up yesterday’s posting about languages, I am posting this map I found on Wikipedia that shows where different languages are spoken throughout Europe. I find this type of map quite interesting to view, yet I feel it lacks one important cartographic aspect: overlap. Basically, the simplified map above does not show where multiple languages are spoken, rather only where the dominant languages are. By not including this important aspect we are given a nicely colored map, yet in reality there is a lot more merging of colors because there are geographies that have multiple languages spoken.

It’s too bad I don’t know Hebrew because tonight’s exhibition will most likely include some Hebrew on maps of Israel.

#UPDATE – I have updated the map to the latest version on Wikipedia, which was made in February 25, 2009.

A new change in Washington, DC’s imagery on Google’s servers
|| 7/10/2007 || 9:42 am || 2 Comments Rendered || ||

For the last 3 years I have followed how the aerial & satellite imagery of Washington, DC has been released, redacted, and remixed. This entry marks another important observation and a new discovery in Google Maps.

Last week I discovered the extent to which Google has updated their servers with the 2005 USGS aerial photography. My findings suggest that Google has censored much of downtown Washington, DC by not using a substanial amount of newer imagery.

Map of American Casualties
|| 7/5/2005 || 9:38 pm || Comments Off on Map of American Casualties || ||

This map was assembled by the Palm Beach Post to show the origins of where American service men & women that have died in Iraq & Afghanistan. The green dot represents one soldier, yellow represents 2-5, orange 6-10, and red 11-29 dead soldiers. If you click on the image above, you will be taken to interactive map that will allow you to zoom in and get more information about our fallen soldiers as well as send your condolences. Great, but sad map.

geographic dimensions of spam
|| 5/11/2005 || 11:00 am || Comments Off on geographic dimensions of spam || ||

The Postini Resource Center monitors spam and virus statistics around the world wide web. On their website they have some maps that show the geographic origins of viruses, spam, and directory harvest attacks. I found the location of where the highest concentrations of viral activity the most intriguing as well as where spam is being generated (above). I’m such a map nerd…
