DC Democracy Supporters Plan Action at First DC Baseball Game in 30 Years

DC Colonists to Hold “Strike 4 DC Statehood‚” Placards at Nationals‚ April 3 Exhibition Game

Activists Want The Colonist‚ to be Nationals Mascot

WASHINGTON, DC – Twenty DC Democracy supporters calling themselves the DC Colonists, will be out in force during the first baseball game at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in over 30 years. During the Sunday, April 3, exhibition game, twenty baseball fans/activists plan to flash placards that spell “Strike 4 DC Statehood‚” after every strikeout.

“We are not doing this to protest the Nationals. We are very excited about baseball coming back to DC,” John Capozzi said, “Baseball is an American pastime. Democracy is an American principle. By attending this game with our signs, we are showcasing our support for both.”

WHO: DC Colonists – twenty DC Democracy supporters
WHAT:Strike 4 DC Statehood‚ Sign at Nationals‚ April 3 Exhibition Game
WHERE: RFK Stadium
WHEN: Sunday, April 3, beginning at 12:05pm, Section 438 Rows 3 and 4

“We would love to have our mascot, The Colonist, become the official mascot of the Nationals,” said Adam Eidinger, who purchased the 20 tickets on March 12 wearing a full 18th Century costume, “We want baseball fans from all over the country to understand that DC residents are effectively second class citizens due to our lack of Statehood.”

Unlike citizens of states, DC residents pay federal taxes, yet lack full representation in the U.S. Congress. Additionally, DC‚s local budget must be approved by Congress before it is implemented. Any Congressional delays prevent the District from spending new funds on such urgent needs as health care, schools, and public safety. Finally, Members of Congress can attach “riders,” restrictions that negate the wishes of DC‚s voters. Current riders include a ban on needle exchange programs to prevent HIV/AIDS and a prohibition on implementing the initiative to allow marijuana to be used for medical purposes. If DC were a state, we would have full representation in Congress and local control over our budget.

The DC Colonists plan to attend many Nationals games at RFK and in cities across the nation throughout the spring and summer.

DC Colonists is a project of members of the DC Democratic Party, DC Statehood Green Party and Stand Up! for Democracy in DC Coalition.

I just got the AWStats analysis back from the Inaugural Map IP logs… All I can say is WOW! I am going to be posting the HTML results on my website later tonight…. It looks like another analysis of the IP logs is needed for some of the IPs that didn’t resolve, so there might be some updated content tomorrow as well…..144,000 domain names takes a long while to analyze!….

save RFK!
|| 3/18/2005 || 11:00 pm || Comments Off on save RFK! || ||

its too bad I don’t have newer imagery that shows the baseball field instead of the soccer field.

I really like RFK Stadium because it reminds me of a slightly squashed version of Busch Stadium in my hometown of Saint Louis, Missourah.
RFK just needs a good fixer-upper. Its also in a beautiful location which is geographically in line with the National Mall. The new stadium will definitely not be. :-(

Background aerial photography from the USGS. I believe the photograph was taken in the summer 2002.

The Colonist in the Post

From this morning’s Washington Post:

Another capital pastime — politics — was also on display. Adam Eidinger, a frequent D.C. Statehood Green candidate who protested taxpayer financing for the Nationals’ future ballpark in the city, wore an 18th-century-style frock coat, ruffled shirt, knee breeches and white stockings, modeling what he said should be the team’s new mascot, a colonist — a nod to D.C. residents’ status as taxpaying U.S. citizens without a vote in Congress.

Eidinger, a publicist and protest organizer, said he planned to buy 20 tickets for supporters to attend games with flip cards carrying his “Strike-4-Statehood” slogan, hoping to snare television time.

Once I have the approval from a few others, I’ll post the picture / flyer I made using a picture of Adam dressed up as a colonist! I think its great- we beat Major League Baseball and selected a mascot first!

gaia theory

My friend Heather Fink nicely touches on Lovelock’s Gaia Theory:

All things in the world, nature, people, mountains and all- they are all amazing in themselves. Our universe, as one living, breathing, interacting thing, is so fucking amazing, that I believe that all things and all atoms share existence as something that we all have in common. Simply that we are alive and exist, we are all sharing time. This time right now together. And the sum of all things existing, as a whole, works together to create a sum greater than that of its parts. So the world is so amazing and phenomenal that things perceived as supernatural or miraculous are actually a part of this world, and not something else.

A theory that has affected my spirituality immensely. When you stand atop a majestic mountain or plant your feet in the cool ocean water or look down at the earth from a satellite, you can see how everything is interconnected while interdependent. I study geography, the science of space & place, and the understanding of the Gaia Theory, the notion that I am apart of one giant living organism means that my space and place within such a system is crucial. Am I a virus (think Matrix, consuming and destroying) or am I an organ (collection of cells doing a specfic task in balance)? Or maybe I’m some vestigial organ? For some reason I like think I am a cancerous organ, doing a specific task while my free radical cells rebel.

Recycling and Environmental Facts:

  • Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 trees, 2 barrels of oil (enough to run the average car for 1,260 miles), 4,100 kilowatts of energy (enough power for the average home for 6 months), 3.2 cubic yards of landfill space, and 60 pounds of air pollution. Trash to Cash
  • Americans throw away enough aluminum to rebuild our entire commercial fleet of airplanes every 3 months. Environmental Defense Fund
  • About 80% of what Americans throw away is recyclable, yet our recycling rate is just 28%. Environmental Protection Agency
  • Over ½ million trees are saved each year by recycling paper in Boulder County. Eco-Cycle
  • There are more roads in our National Forests than the entire U.S. Interstate Highway system. National Forest Protection Alliance
  • Recycling creates 6 times as many jobs as landfilling. Colorado Recycles
  • Recycling glass instead of making it from silica sand reduces mining waste by 70%, water use by 50%, and air pollution by 20%. Environmental Defense Fund
  • Recycling just one aluminum can saves enough energy to operate a TV for 3 hours. Eco-Cycle
  • If we recycled all of the newspapers printed in the U.S. on a typical Sunday, we would save 550,000 trees–or about 26 million trees per year. California Department of Conservation
  • The energy saved each year by steel recycling is equal to the electrical power used by 18 million homes each year – or enough energy to last Los Angeles residents for eight years. Steel Recycling Institute
  • If every household in the U.S. replaced just one roll of 1,000 sheet virgin fiber bathroom tissues with 100% recycled ones, we could save: 373,000 trees, 1.48 million cubic feet of landfill space, and 155 million gallons of water. Seventh Generation Co.
  • The U.S. is 5% of the world’s population but uses 25% of its natural resources. Environmental Protection Agency
  • Leave it to Boulder to have one of the best recycling programs in the country!

DC is going to single stream recycling shortly. It will render my “Recycling Room” slightly useless, but its still better than burning our trash.

    climate change…. feel it
    || 12/22/2004 || 3:19 pm || Comments Off on climate change…. feel it || ||

Right now the weather outside absolutely beautiful! Its about 55 degrees and sunny. Not too shabby for the first day of winter right? Well…in my opinion, not really, contrast this temperature with Monday, 10 degrees and wind chill below zero. Climate change is an increase in variability of weather patterns and I definitely feel that today is a bit warmer than it should be. What I’d like to see in the field of meteorology is a 3 day net temperature change summary, as in go through the entire history of recorded daily temperatures and contrast the highs & lows of any given 3 day period. For example, by contrasting today’s temperature with Monday’s temperature would yield a 45 degree return. I’d like to see every date plugged into a computer and analyzed to show what the average 3 day net temperature change and to see if over time there has been a statistical increase in temperature variability. Would this prove once and for all that climate change is definitely happening? Probably not, but I’ll just go outside and feel it.

In other news, the Inaugural Map is now 100% operational and hosted off my site! I am going to be adding another layer of all names of buildings, or at least important buildings, on the map. Last night I spammed about 400 people with the URL and about 100 of which were the print media outlets in CT, RI, MA, and NY. In going through my inbox I had found that I still had a press list I had created. So far there has been no media response. Give it a few days, or weeks…

In the middle of Ohio, on a Greyhound Bus traveling back to Saint Louis, I get an estatic call from Adam telling me about his press conference hijinks and asking me if I was at home so I could record the footage of him that was all over the television. I was saddened to tell him I was over a 1,000 miles away from my computer. Not less than 15 minutes later I get a call from my friend Jack, a reporter from NPR, telling me that Adam was all over the news. It totally made my day! My friend, who got more votes than Bush in Washington, DC, all over the news, again :) The article below is probably the best yet!

    its warming up
    || 9/22/2004 || 11:51 pm || 1 Comment Rendered || ||

    Article from the BBC:

“These two papers clearly illustrate, for the first time, the relationship between ice shelf collapses caused by climate warming, and accelerated glacier flow,” said Dr Rignot.

The extra ice presumably translates into higher sea level. But how much this is raising the level of the oceans isn’t known.

The authors of the published papers point out that in other places around the continent, much larger glaciers are also held in check by ice shelves.

To quote a rapper from my hometown, “Its getting hot in here”

I remember watching the ice shelf referenced in this article calve into the ocean on CNN and it made me worry that global warming was actually happening. After watching this about a year ago it made me realize that the levels of CO2 in our atmosphere are relatively off the charts. Off the charts in the sense that there is no historical record CO2 levels this high. The way CO2 is measured in Antarctica is by drilling deep into the snow and collecting samples. When the snow fell and was compacted by snow falling on top of it, small air bubbles were trapped in the snow. These air bubbles contain a microscopic reflection of the atmosphere at that period in history. So right now there is more CO2 than ever and the earth is heating up. So where is the good news? There really isn’t any.

The conversation I had last week with Professor Foggin was about this same issue. Being that he is middle-aged and nearly retired, he made a point to explain his concern about the future. I can tell he was worried about his grandchildren and what kind of earth they are going to inherit. Hell, I am worried about what kind of world my children are going to inherit, but I am glad that I have some education in the earth sciences because it makes me feel empowered that I have the know-how to change things. Well maybe not change things entirely, but have the ability to show others ways they can combat & adapt to our changing world. And the wind of change is beginning to blow stronger.

There is a difference between global warming and climate change that is not quite understood by most people I’ve talked with. Climate change is what we will begin to experience as our earth continues to warm due to the influx of CO2. One of my professors who studied the atmospheric sciences explained climate change as an increase in the variability of the weather patterns. Essentially meaning that there will be more randomness in the weather and what was considered normal weather will be a distant memory. I personally think that the numerous hurricanes that have taken place in the last month are a sign of things to come. I expect to see the sea levels rise and the treasures of Venice, Amsterdam, and even most of Bangladesh go under water during my lifetime. I expect to see the locusts in West Africa begin to plague other parts of the world in my lifetime. And sadly, I expect to see others turn their head until its too late.

The only glimmer of hope I can postulate is global cooling. It would only take a few massive volcanic eruptions to put enough soot into the atmosphere that the earth will begin to cool. Its possible. Its also possible to recycle more and plant trees.

As for this rendering, its a new modification on the old template. Instead of making the background completely neutral (black or white), I added 2D randomized image of the inner satellite image. I think it looks beautiful! I also removed the glass sphere and made the satellite image of the Himalayas wrapped around the sphere. The next rendering will have the background be a 3D image to add depth. I look forward to seeing it when its finished!
