I-35W Bridge Quilt

Like the MacArthur Maze Quilt, this map is a prime example of mapping current events. On August 1st the bridge in this map unexpected collapsed killing and injuring scores of people. Having family living in the Twin City area, I took notice of this bridge’s collapse and decided to make a map.

Last year in October I was in the area for my Grandma’s funeral and remember seeing the bridge off in the distance. I even remember being driven across the bridge when I was a lot younger. So unlike most of the maps I’ve made which feature locations I have yet to visit, this one really hits home for me.

The Shanghai Map by Nikolas Schiller

A little over a month ago a Chinese friend of mine moved from DC back to Shanghai, China. While we were chatting on-line I asked her if she’d be able to send me some text in Chinese so I could use it on some maps. The first use of this text was the banners I made a couple weeks ago and today marks my first use of the text on an actual map.

The map was created from a Terra satellite image taken of eastern China on April 4th, 2004. The text simply says “map,” and with the location & text combined, you get the title, “The Shanghai Map.”

Unlike any of the quilt projection maps before this, I decided to use only one tessellation rotated 45 degrees. This switch-up is because I’ve never used Simplified Chinese before on a map and wanted this one to be completely unique. With the colors, text, and type of tessellation, I am quite pleased with this map and I look forward to using the text she supplied me for future maps!

In an effort to cover more areas that have available imagery that I haven’t mapped yet, I decided to make a couple maps of Jacksonville, Florida. Prior to downloading the Jacksonville imagery I made an attempt to get some imagery of Connecticut because I have yet to map the Constitution State. However, there was only black & white imagery and false color imagery, both of which I don’t like to use.

When preparing to download the Jacksonville imagery I had the choice to download .3 meter imagery from 2004 and 1 foot imagery from 2005. Both equal roughly the same spatial resolution (.3 meters = about 1 foot), but what I discovered after viewing the imagery was that Google is currently using the 2004 imagery. Thus I chose to use the 2005 imagery so that I can add another city where I beat Google to the map.

I really like the way the color of the water shows up. The buildings are slightly bleached out, but its because the source imagery arrived that way. I want to make Madison next but its only available in black & white. bleh.

After years of waiting I finally have color aerial photography of Wisconsin available to use. Green Bay is still not available to download and Milwaulkee’s imagery is a bit colorless (but not black & white), so I doubt I’ll be making anymore from this state for a little bit. Regardless, I am happy to have made a map for the state of Wisconsin.

Enrico Fermi Nuclear Reactor Quilt
|| 7/23/2007 || 8:01 am || Comments Off on Enrico Fermi Nuclear Reactor Quilt || ||

: rendered at 18,000 X 12,000 :

In November of 2005 I went to Ann Arbor, Michigan for Thanksgiving. While riding in a bus from Toledo to Detroit I saw the Enrico Fermi Nuclear Reactor off in the distance. When I was making the maps of Detroit last year I tried to download the imagery of the reactor, but was unable to because the USGS coverage of Detroit did not reach far enough south. And now it does :-)

This map uses the same cloud motif that Baton Rogue Quilt uses, but there is a larger issue I am expoliting in this map. No, it’s not Homer Simpson job, but national security. In my opinion, nuclear power plants are some of the most dangerous places on earth and should be guarded heavily, even through redaction. Yet while Google is censoring downtown Washington, DC, anyone in the world can download high resolution imagery of a nuclear power plant in rural Michigan. Where is the security? Well at least I see beauty.
