Star of Denver
|| 1/27/2005 || 11:01 pm || Comments Off on Star of Denver || ||

Looks like I made another beautiful creation! Of course the 1200X800 pixels above do no justice for the original 20000X15000 pixels, but the way the aerial photograph was captured gives some beautiful symmetry. The straight grid streets line up nicely, and the shadows of the late day photograph make the buildings look larger than life. I already know who is getting the first print of this one :-)

===
There have been two prints of this map. The first was given to Joseph Kerski, Geographer at the USGS in the spring of 2005 and the second was sold during the fall of 2005 to a relative of former professor.

Star of the Middle East no.2 by Nikolas Schiller

This is my first redesign of the “star of..” series. I added two more rings and now it almost looks like a molecule! I think its absolutely gorgeous. I can’t wait to get it printed!!

I think she turned out nicely. Next up with be the Europe mandala!

Logan’s Ovaries
|| || 9:57 pm || Comments Off on Logan’s Ovaries || ||

The background is a tessellation of the Middle East (Egypt, Israel, Saudia Arabia, UAE, Iraq, Kuwait, Turkey, etc) and mapped on to Mother Earth herself is Washington, DC. By spatial chance, Logan’s Circle kinda looks like Mother Earth’s ovaries :)

U.S. Naval Observatory Lenz
|| 12/21/2004 || 11:41 am || Comments Off on U.S. Naval Observatory Lenz || ||

I used a strike-through font on the signature to make note of the fact that the beauty of this image is from redaction of the U.S. Naval Observatory (home of Dick Cheney). This is one of my favorite renderings yet!

Star of DC
|| 12/13/2004 || 1:01 am || Comments Off on Star of DC || ||

I realized I hadn’t made a “star of..” DC yet! So I used the template and slightly changed the way the image is mapped on to the surface and I kinda like the way it turned out. What’s even better is the new computer I got from work (1.7 mhz w/ 512 RAM laptop) can churn out a rendering in a fraction of the time! This means more posters and faster turnaround. However, I am still figuring out how I am going to port all the files from the laptop to the my iMac…

Mother Earth #3
|| 12/7/2004 || 7:59 am || Comments Off on Mother Earth #3 || ||

I just inverted the images from “Mother Earth #2,” and I’m looking into the next combination…

Mother Earth #2
|| 12/6/2004 || 2:44 pm || Comments Off on Mother Earth #2 || ||

I used a high resolution image of downtown Saint Louis with a low spatial resolution Landsat image of the midwest.

I think this is a pretty cool animation. There are two flaws I noticed, but I don’t think they detract too much from the animation.

Mother Earth #1

In the full size version you can actually see the houses in the background that were damaged in Florida by Hurricane Ivan in September. You can also see her eyes, and face as well. I choose the background image simply because its a picture of Mother Earth’s vengence. I broke away from my one light source convention to include an extra light source on her crotch to represent rebirth. Was thinking of adding a wooden cross behind her to artistically imply that Mother Earth is dying for your ecological sins. Kinda philosophically heavy or not.
