Star of Baltimore
|| 3/20/2005 || 9:38 pm || Comments Off on Star of Baltimore || ||

So I found out after looking very closely at the embedded signature I added to the source imagery of Baltimore, and after two renderings, I realized that I spelled my name wrong! NIKOLLAS SCHILLER… I have subsequently deleted and rerendered the scenes. I think I might keep the “Abstract Baltimore” the way it is with the mispelling, because afterall, it’s supposed to be Abstract. In other news, on saturday I framed two more of my renderings, and I must say they look wonderful on the wall!

Abstract Baltimore
|| 3/19/2005 || 4:31 pm || Comments Off on Abstract Baltimore || ||

Pretty Abstract! I still feel that it looks like a gas mask!

This rendering and the next (Baltimore Lenz) both contain a subtle change that makes them different from all of the other renderings. I decided to create a watermark of my “signed” name within the satellite imagery. So when you are looking at the print up close, you can see that I have embedded my signature. Call it visual meta-tagging.

I am debating on whether I should continue this practice or not. In doing so, I can theoretically remove the banner with my “signed” name that every image has and just render the images in 3:2 and save the step of post processing the rendering. Yet, the visual meta-tag is only visible when printed out an not on my standard web size of 800 X 1200. For now I just use both styles.

Baltimore World Trade Center…
|| 3/13/2005 || 5:56 pm || Comments Off on Baltimore World Trade Center… || ||

I downloaded an aerial photograph of the entire downtown Baltimore area. I noticed that the Baltimore World Trade Center showed up perfectly geographically aligned in the orthorectified image (as in I didn’t rotate it). I cut out the building, reflected it:

I ended up making my first piece of Geospatial Art using only photoshop. I signed this one “created” rather than “rendered” to lexically differenciate the two methods of synthesizing the imagery. I think I might end up using the image below as a background for the next Baltimore rendering. I thinking of going “Abstract“.

GeoSpatial Art

A sense of achievement lies in the link above. For nearly a year now I’ve been making this weird type of “art” using aerial & satellite images on my computer and I always had trouble explaining what exactly I was creating. Not Earth As Art, not Geographic Art, but art created in a 3D (spatial) environment using aerial and satellite imagery (geo) – GeoSpatial Art.

San Francisco Memory by Nikolas Schiller

I think my sister is going to love this print. Slowly but surely, I’ve rendered images of all the locations my family is located. In the full size version of this rendering, you can actually see my sister’s apartment! I think my favorite aspect of this rendering this the way the Golden Gate Park appears to give some rectangular symmetry. Here is a Google Map of the same area:

The source image from Space Imaging was rotated so the resulting rendering has Golden Gate Bridge at both the top & bottom center. Of course the full size version allows one to see the bridge in better detail. This is my third rendering of this series.

Minneapolis Memory

So the domes in the center are the Minneapolis Convention Center. The domes give the rendering an interesting degree of symmetry (which I love). The first print of this rendering is going to my colleague from ESRI, Angie, who lives in Minneapolis and gave me the inspiration to make this rendering. I used the same template for this rendering as I used for the “Post 9/11 Reflection #3” rendering, yet since I used imagery from the USGS, I can sell this baby to the highest bidder. I wonder if my relatives in St. Paul would like a copy? Eh.

##update##
Hello visitors from The Dredwerkz. I definitely think GeoURL is one of the coolest websites out there. It gives the web an interesting spatial context which can show how people with various opinions and lifestyles can cohabitate within a neighborhood, and best of all blog about it!

FYI, this person also has a blog in my house. She just hasn’t been added to the database yet. I think you might find hers a little more fun to read than mine!

I used the same source image as I used for my last rendering and mapped it as a texture on to the “star of..” series template and then I animated a fly-through…looks pretty good. So good that I included not one, but threee screen shots of the animation.

DC Lenz #3

Thank Spacing Imaging for providing me with that image. Its the same image that I used in the “site map” and on the newly formed intro page. This time I used the fact that the source image had limited resolution (1280 x 1024 pixels) and I multiplied it a total of 36 times to achieve a larger mendala. The lenz was the same size as DC Lenz #2, as well as the same backround layout. This is one of my favorites, but the pixels are owned by someone else. :-(

Last week at the ESRI Federal GIS Users Conference I picked up a MASSIVE print of Las Vegas, Nevada and this week some of my friends began discussing the possibility of going to Las Vegas this spring. The Digital Globe print has all of the mega resorts and even a perfect zenith over the Luxor. I, however, do not have any plans to go there. Its a place I want to go to when I have a lot of money to blow.

So it turns out that the guy who gave me the dinars was actually an ROTC Guy who is studying law in DC. He is currently “undeployable.” I think once he graduates he’ll be off to the front lines. God speed soldier. Bring me back more worthless money that shows the price of liberation.

Star of Europe

This rendering turned out well, but I still like Star of the Middle East slightly more. There isn’t enough color variation in this rendering, but as with the rest of the renderings, I can’t wait to get it printed out. Yesterday I discovered that I can get a $1,000 grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, so I’m definitely going to write up a statement of need in the next couple weeks!
