Last night, after watching the video in my previous posting, I decided to look around the satellite/aerial imagery of Las Vegas to gauge the level of sprawl. Upon further inspection I discovered how much of Las Vegas is composed of large tracts of suburban, low-density housing. I knew there was a lot of this type of development, but it wasn’t until I started looking closely did I see the pattern of the development.

The neighborhood of Las Vegas that I chose to use for today’s map is called West Sahara. It’s a large retirement community that allows only people aged 55 or older to be residents. I guess you could say that I’m happy that I’m not even allowed to live there for at least 27 years. But as I mused before, will there be any water left in 2036 when I qualify to live in neighborhood? I jest, I would never live there– put me in the mountains or a city, but not in a cookie cutter house surrounded by only people my age.

Anyways, I chose the location because it features one of my favorite transportation designs, the traffic circle. I might make a derivative map of this location later today…

I am in the process of making hexagon quilt projection maps of all the major traffic circles in Washington, DC. I have most of the circles covered and intend on continuing this project as I acquire new imagery of Washington, DC. Of important note is that Dupont, Logan, Washington, and Scott circles all lie with the area that is censored in Google Maps. Also, this is one of the first maps that I’ve made in a few years that features National Geographic‘s headquarters. I will probably make a derivative map dedicated to National Geographic.

I decided to switch things up a bit with today’s rendering. I have become very efficient with most of the processes used to create my maps, which both makes them standardized and sometimes a bit too similar to each other (while paradoxically being different geographies). This map and probably the next few maps are going to be slightly different.

In order to have the most recent maps of Logan Circle, Dupont Circle, and Washington Circle look similar to each other, I would take the first derivative tessellation and overlay it on top of the tessellation that I was constructing. By adjusting the transparency, I can overlay the circles directly on top of each other which makes the subsequent map look nearly identical.

Normally, I simply delete the original tessellation when I have the two lined up perfectly, however in today’s map I chose to not delete the other map. Instead, I adjusted the transparency of Dupont Circle to 51% to show both geographies at once. The result is something that I wasn’t expecting, but am quite pleased with the results. I can see myself using this process again. It’s like a double exposure…

By using the exact same tessellation process, I was hoping that this derivative map would look similar to Dupont Circle Quilt 2005 #2 and Logan Circle Quilt #2. Alas, I must have not used the EXACT tessellation process because the circle looks slightly different, but I am still pleased with the result. I intend on making maps of the rest of the circles in Washington, DC.

Using this portion of the Los Alamitos Quilt #2, I created a derivative tessellation to create this map.

Park Circle Quilt - Interactive by Nikolas Schiller

I took the 9,000 x 6,000 version (one half the original) of Park Circle Quilt reduced it in size one half (to 4,500 x 3,000), then doubled the width by copying the quilt (final dimensions: 9,000 x 3,000). Using the program Make Cubic I made a Quicktime Virtual Reality environment of the location. It’s about 20 megabytes so be patient while it downloads.

Like Dupont Circle, Grant Circle, Park La Brea, and Ladd’s Addition, I’ve used another street circle for a map. I really like making these maps too. I’ve found that some of the coolest maps are the ones that have their own geometry that I am able to exploit. After scouring Los Angeles the other day I stumbled upon this small plot of land in Inglewood that has a small circle (Park Circle) with 5 streets radiating from it and decided it was good enough to remake. Similar to Dupont Circle Quilt #2, the two circles combine to create an added effect that I find interesting.

If you know of locations that have a circle and are in a large city in America (and not DC), please send me info about the location!

I used one of the smallest tessellations yet to make this. The source imagery of the tiled Dupont Circle was only 2,600 pixels, but I made the right calculations to keep spatial resolution very similar the final product the same as the source (I counted how many times I saw the full tiled go across and multipled by 2,600). I like how it turned out, but I wish there was more merging of the circle itself, as in the circle itself would become a larger circle around the center. Up next, I am going to make one using nothing but imagery of GWU.
