The other night I was browsing the antique maps on the in American Memory Collection map stumbled upon Smith’s New Map of London (1860). As I was looking at 19th century London, I came across the geometrically shaped building that look surprisingly like some of the mashed-up buildings in my maps (see map detail above).

The building was known as the Millbank Penitentiary and was designed by William Williams in 1812 in accordance with the utilitarian principles laid down by Jeremy Bentham‘s Panopticon prison design. This radial design would allow the guards to monitor all the prisoners at all times, without any prisoner being aware of whether he/she was being monitored or not. Akin to today’s closed circuit television cameras, the Panopticon design is still used today in many prisons around the world.

Peter McRorie Higgins describes the Millbank Penitentiary extensively in The Scurvy Scandal at Millbank Penitentiary: A Reassessment:

After reading over the meta-data from both the 2004 & 2006 datasets of the Los Angeles orthoimagery, I discovered that the 2006 imagery is scanned from printed photographs taken in 2001! That is, the photography was taken 2001 by the USGS, printed out, then scanned (at 1700 DPI) & processed in 2006 by AirPhotoUSA, and then released into the public domain. I could be wrong, but that is my analysis of the meta-data. I assume this was done because the inferior quality of the 2004 imagery in regards to the shadows. Lastly, when looking at the Google Map of the stadium (which uses the same imagery as this map), they incorrectly state that the imagery is copyrighted to Sanborn.

I made two tessellations of the Los Angeles Dodgers stadium. One from the 2004 imagery and one from the 2006 imagery. Of note is that Google Maps is currently using the 2006 imagery (it looks like the seats had been taken out of the stadium and were placed in the parking lot). The problem with the 2004 dataset of LA is that the flyover was done in the afternoon and the shadows obscure much of the ground. The best example of this is Los Angeles Quilt, which shows downtown but with too many shadows.

Park Circle Quilt – Interactive

Park Circle Quilt - Interactive by Nikolas Schiller

I took the 9,000 x 6,000 version (one half the original) of Park Circle Quilt reduced it in size one half (to 4,500 x 3,000), then doubled the width by copying the quilt (final dimensions: 9,000 x 3,000). Using the program Make Cubic I made a Quicktime Virtual Reality environment of the location. It’s about 20 megabytes so be patient while it downloads.

Like Dupont Circle, Grant Circle, Park La Brea, and Ladd’s Addition, I’ve used another street circle for a map. I really like making these maps too. I’ve found that some of the coolest maps are the ones that have their own geometry that I am able to exploit. After scouring Los Angeles the other day I stumbled upon this small plot of land in Inglewood that has a small circle (Park Circle) with 5 streets radiating from it and decided it was good enough to remake. Similar to Dupont Circle Quilt #2, the two circles combine to create an added effect that I find interesting.

If you know of locations that have a circle and are in a large city in America (and not DC), please send me info about the location!

Park La Brea (Spanish: La Brea – The tar, after the nearby La Brea Tar Pits) is a sprawling apartment complex in the Miracle Mile District of Los Angeles, California. It encompasses more than 4,000 apartments in both high-rise and garden-style buildings, and sits on 160 acres (0.65 km2) of land with numerous lawns. It’s layout is geometric and lends itself to my map style. This is my third iteration of the series featuring the area around Park La Brea in Los Angeles, California. Its one of my favorites :-)

Park La Brea’s geometric design allows for some excellent manipulations. For the first time in a VERY long time I’ve decided to create not one, but two fractals of a specific location. Number 3 will be up shortly…
