Kurti

Screen grab featuring Home Quilt #6

So as I mentioned back in January, I was looking for a blog where my website was linked using the words “Kurti.” Today I found what I was looking for! It’s a blog entry in Latvian from April. Now I just need to get it all translated…

Washington + Dupont Circle Quilt

Washington + Dupont Circle Quilt by Nikolas Schiller

I decided to switch things up a bit with today’s rendering. I have become very efficient with most of the processes used to create my maps, which both makes them standardized and sometimes a bit too similar to each other (while paradoxically being different geographies). This map and probably the next few maps are going to be slightly different.

In order to have the most recent maps of Logan Circle, Dupont Circle, and Washington Circle look similar to each other, I would take the first derivative tessellation and overlay it on top of the tessellation that I was constructing. By adjusting the transparency, I can overlay the circles directly on top of each other which makes the subsequent map look nearly identical.

Normally, I simply delete the original tessellation when I have the two lined up perfectly, however in today’s map I chose to not delete the other map. Instead, I adjusted the transparency of Dupont Circle to 51% to show both geographies at once. The result is something that I wasn’t expecting, but am quite pleased with the results. I can see myself using this process again. It’s like a double exposure…

You are here in Danish

Du Er Her = You Are Here (in Danish)

About a month ago I was contacted by the author of the book “You Are Here: Personal Geographies and Other Maps of the Imagination.” She was interested in using one of my maps for her upcoming book (expect another posting in the not-so-distant future about this). One of my daily reads as of late is Copenhagen Cycle Chic. It’s a simple blog that shows photographs of women on bicycles in the Denmark’s capital city. Looking at the photographs everyday make me want to move to Copenhagen. The other day while I was looking through the author’s Flickr photostream I spotted the photo above and smiled.

By using the exact same tessellation process, I was hoping that this derivative map would look similar to Dupont Circle Quilt 2005 #2 and Logan Circle Quilt #2. Alas, I must have not used the EXACT tessellation process because the circle looks slightly different, but I am still pleased with the result. I intend on making maps of the rest of the circles in Washington, DC.

In today’s Washington Jewish Weekly newspaper

My piece at the JCC is mentioned in an article in today’s Washington Jewish Weekly:

The piece by D.C. resident Nikolas Schiller portrays the Palestinian refugees’ perspective and, he says, “dissent.” He is dissenting from the 1993 map of Israel and the Palestinian territories, upon which he based his kaleidoscope image, because he sees it as “biased” in showing the territories in stripes, he says.

He also has included an image of Handala, an iconic Palestinian cartoon that he found on the Internet, on the map. Handala, which means “bitterness” in Arabic, “represents the abused Palestinian refugees,” he says.

I don’t remember saying the word “abused” the entire time I spoke with the reporter, but I’ll let it slide.

Screen grab showing a small detail of a Concentric Quilt

Starting in mid-November I’ve been volunteering my time with the Walters Museum‘s upcoming exhibition. They have a small technology center (4 iMacs) in their cafeteria which I was given the opportunity to review. I look forward to going to the opening later this month!!

The Walters Museum has also included a layer for Google Earth that I produced for the exhibit. You can download the layer here or here.

I ran into my friend Brendan Hoffman at the L(A)TTITUDES opening. Recently he had one of his photographs published on the front page of the New York Times and since I have so few photographs of my maps hung, I asked him if he’d be interested in taking pictures of the PEACE NOW! opening. He agreed and when I arrived at the Warehouse he was already taking pictures. In all he took over 100 great photos of the opening and below are my 40 favorite photos.

The 87 & 280 Interchange in San Jose, California

Using this portion of 87 & 280 Quilt #3, I constructed this derivative map of the California State Route 87 & interstate 280 interchange. This is the final map of the series. It reminds me of a braided highway!

MySpace has fixed it’s front page—- 7 months later…
|| 2/23/2008 || 9:36 pm || Comments Off on MySpace has fixed it’s front page—- 7 months later… || ||

Back in August of 2007 I discovered something I thought was awry on MySpace’s front page. It was showing the exact same number of videos uploaded each day. I was like, “this is a lie,” its impossible that the EXACT same number of videos were uploaded each day. The only way this was theoretically possible was if there was an upper ceiling on the number of videos that MySpace could handle. As in, their servers could only process X number of videos each day. Yet that theory is based on the premise that there was ample content being uploaded on a daily basis. I concluded that this lack of updates was out of laziness. The worst part of this lack of genuine updates was that MySpace was trying to combat phishing, which was based on people being taken a to fake login page and entering their login & password information. So if MySpace’s login page was static and not changing, yet at the same time incorrectly stating that there were X amount of new videos uploaded each day, I wanted to document this egregious error. Nearly every other day when I was asked to login on MySpace’s front page, I would do a screen grab similar to the ones shown above & below. In all, I collected over 100 different screen grabs and in due time I plan on making an aggregate graphic of all of the screen grabs in the order that they were collected. I am posting this today because I believe that this project is now over. It looks as if MySpace has now fixed this error; it only took 7 months.
