Ivan Memory by Nikolas Schiller

Using an aerial photograph from NOAA of Pensacola, Florida taken shortly after Hurricane Ivan, I’ve modified my old “memory” template to produce this rendering. Instead of keeping some background imagery, like in DC Memory, I’ve made this rendering to show only the two primatives used to make the rendering. The result is what I think to be the future of my next renderings (as in expect more renderings in the “memory” series). I really like the way the reflection of the source imagery makes the bridge over the water appear to be an oval. I can’t wait to get this map printed!

Bush’s Bitch stands up to be heard
|| 4/29/2005 || 10:15 am || Comments Off on Bush’s Bitch stands up to be heard || ||

I really don’t like vulgarity of the initial name I’ve given to this rendering, but I think its fitting. The contemplative nude female is textured with an aerial photograph of downtown Washington, DC (including the White House) over her body to give her location, and a name, “Bush’s Bitch.” Her folded arms and her stance produces an evocative signal that she is waiting for others to snap out of the mold and begin to take on the lemmings. It’s like she silently screaming, “Let me vote! I want representation like every other American.”

To make this rendering, I used the same template I used for my Valentines Day present to GWB. I have another version of this graphic that says “Don’t be a Lemming. Vote Green,” but I haven’t put it on my website, instead I uploaded it to DC Indymedia. I am brainstorming ways I can make another version of this rendering with more of a super-human touch.

Using the same revised templated used in “GWU Memory,” I made a new rendering of downtown DC. I think the coolest part of the rendering is the “bending” of the White House!

I must thank L’Enfant…

San Francisco Memory revisited
|| || 7:46 pm || Comments Off on San Francisco Memory revisited || ||

So yesterday my sister asks me if I can get her imagery of San Fran for her school project. This afternoon I tried going to the USGS and had their web-based GIS not work properly, so I gave up attempting to acquire the imagery. Later today (like 4 hours later), I found an old CD that was laying on top of my TV and I realized that CD had the “San Francisco Memory” rendering on it. So I opened it up, and to my amazement, the spot at which the earth and the ocean meet near the center of the rendering is where the property she is working on is located. On March 5th, I created special memory….

I have finally created what I feel is a complete Mandala. Normally the renderings only have 2 axises of symmetry and this one has 4, making it my most sophisticated work yet. I’ve already sold my first copy! The process I used to create this rendering is going to be replicated and used for the “Lenz Project” and I am SO excited about how they’ll turn out!!!

=update=
This print was sold to Dr. Marie Price, Chair of the GWU Geography Department.

interesting

The “squaring of the circle” is one of the many archetypal motifs which form the basic patterns of our dreams and fantasies. But it is distinguished by the fact that it is one of the most important of them from the functional point of view. Indeed, it could even be called the archetype of wholeness.
– from Mandalas. C. G. Jung. trans. from Du (Zurich, 1955)

When I rendered images from the “Lenz Project” I actually used a square image behind the circle…

I grew in that rendering. From 1985 until 2002 my family resided in a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment in the Burtonwood Manor Condiminiums and paid a grand total of roughly $530 a month. I spent much of my formative years here and it holds a truly special place in my heart. I know that I can go back there and still see some of the folks I grew up with. Spaces and places will change, but the memories still remain. I think this my favorite rendering yet, simply because subject not only hits close to home, it is home.

My mother has the first print of this rendering :-)

The Modern Geographer
|| 3/25/2005 || 11:55 am || Comments Off on The Modern Geographer || ||

This is my first draft of what I am calling “The Modern Geographer.” The background is a painting titled “The Geographer” by one of my favorite painters of all time, Johannes Vermeer. I scanned a picture I had of the painting and modified it to give it symmetry. I used a poser from one of my programs and mapped her body with the 2002 USGS aerial photography of the area around the White House in Washington, DC. I ended up rendering it at 8000X6000, but I realized that when I scanned the painting, I scanned it too large so that if you look closely you can actually see the RGB colors dots from the printer. I am going to rescan to the painting so I can downsample it slightly and make the colors a bit more richer. I’m still not sure where I should place the poser, or if I should include more posers, possible give her a globe to gaze at, she is a Modern Geographer afterall…

For some reason it looks like I never posted this in my blog… I totally remember doing so, but I can’t find it! Nonetheless, I love this rendering! The shadows the Washington Monument coupled with the reflections make it fun to look at. I can’t wait to reflect it a little more :-D

Baltimore Lenz
|| 3/21/2005 || 10:53 am || Comments Off on Baltimore Lenz || ||

Man this weekend was nothing but Baltimore. I should have gone to my friend’s house party on Friday night in Baltimore….oh well…no regrets I made 4 renderings this weekend. I still need to sign my newest DC rendering which finished up this morning. Its just sitting in photoshop right now at home waiting to be “signed.” I’ll put it on-line tonight. In December I snagged the USGS hi-res aerial photograph of the southern half of the National Mall and cropped the image so that the Washington Monument is reflected in the center. The finished rendering looks really nice, and when I zoom into the Monument there is no degradation in visual quality. It will definitely go on the wall next to DC Lenz #2. However, the printing queue is backed up about 20 prints right now….grrr..
