Mount Vernon Quilt #3

Using this portion of Mount Vernon Quilt #3, I created a derivative tessellation to create this fractal map.

Up next I have another map of Mount Vernon based off of a fourth dervative tessellation created from this map. I believe that the next map will be the most derivatives I’ve created from one source map!

Using this portion of Mount Vernon Quilt #2, I created a derivative tessellation to create this fractal map. Up next I have another map of Mount Vernon based off of a third dervative tessellation created from this map. The aim is to isolate the area around Baltimore’s Washington Monument.

Unlike previous fractal maps, I have made a slight correction to the source imagery. Earlier this year I discovered how my quilt projection template slightly over-projects the imagery. To combat this, I tried something new with this map. Prior to tessellation, I reduced the source imagery about 10 pixels (or about .003%). I am not sure how much it helped, since I am not exactly sure how much I have over-projected the imagery, but I think I’ll do this from now on.

Lately I’ve been going to Baltimore to work on some tasks and have spent a fair amount of time traversing the streets of old downtown Baltimore. I find the city to have quite a unique character. I enjoy these getaways from DC very much and it’s cheap- only $14 roundtrip on the MARC trains. Cab rides within DC cost more than that!

Mount Vernon is a historic neighborhood in Baltimore, Maryland. Included in this area (and above map) is my favorite monument in Baltimore: the Washington Monument. I prepared a derivative tessellation to show more imagery of the monument in the next map. It should look interesting.

Using a portion of Silver Spring Quilt #1, I made a derivative tessellation and created this fractal map. The “lines” seen above are reflections of the Metro line around the Silver Spring Metro Station.

Up next will a a fractal version. It should look pretty cool :-) It’s too bad that the source aerial photograph was taken so late in the afternoon because the shadows obscure a lot of what’s on the ground.

Over the last few months I’ve been going to Silver Spring for business and I decided to get around to making a map of the central business district.

On August 1st the bridge in this map unexpected collapsed killing and injuring scores of people. Having family living in the Twin City area, I took notice of this bridge’s collapse and decided to make a map.

The Shanghai Map by Nikolas Schiller

A little over a month ago a Chinese friend of mine moved from DC back to Shanghai, China. While we were chatting on-line I asked her if she’d be able to send me some text in Chinese so I could use it on some maps. The first use of this text was the banners I made a couple weeks ago and today marks my first use of the text on an actual map.

The map was created from a Terra satellite image taken of eastern China on April 4th, 2004. The text simply says “map,” and with the location & text combined, you get the title, “The Shanghai Map.”

Unlike any of the quilt projection maps before this, I decided to use only one tessellation rotated 45 degrees. This switch-up is because I’ve never used Simplified Chinese before on a map and wanted this one to be completely unique. With the colors, text, and type of tessellation, I am quite pleased with this map and I look forward to using the text she supplied me for future maps!

random banners now greet you
|| 3/3/2007 || 9:38 pm || Comments Off on random banners now greet you || ||

In an effort to make my website a bit more Internet Explorer friendly, I decided to remove the eponymous flash animation that used to sit on the left side of the screen (It never really showed up properly on IE anyways). The banner has now been replaced with a php script that randomly picks a file in a folder on my website. I made 15 banners that all feature my second generation digital signature in the southwest corner. Each time you visit a new page you will get a new banner displayed (some exceptions). View the entire lot after the fold…
