Tessellations of Time: A 2006 Recap
|| 12/31/2006 || 10:42 am || Comments Off on Tessellations of Time: A 2006 Recap || ||

So I just got done going through all of the 2006 blog entries counting up all the maps I made this year. It turns out that I made 206 maps in 2006! There are a few maps that I did not publish on my website, so the number is technically higher. I wonder if that is a record of some sort? Most maps made in one year by a sole cartographer. Well, it might be, but then again, my maps are not your traditional maps!

Check the complete listing after the fold…

I scaled this one slightly to show more of the area. The goal was to create a full circle out of the school’s track.

I might made another that creates a hexagon or an octogon out of the Pentagon. I think it would look really cool :-)

Georgetown Quilt No. 4 by Nikolas R. Schiller

Wow! Who would have thought that I could make something so different, yet so similar with the EXACT same source imagery as Georgetown Quilt #3? As mentioned before, the only difference between the two is the location of the reflected seam in the source imagery. Instead of placing centeral seam of the modified imagery on Key Bridge, I inversed the location by placing the Key Bridge on the outside.

When preparing the imagery for a rendering there are four tiles that comprise the geographic tessellation, but only one of the tiles retains the proper orthographic characteristics (ie, its how it should look when looking at a map, the other three are flipped horizontally & vertically). By moving the orthographically correct tile to one of the different parts of the 4 tiled mosaic I am able to create to 4 completely different outcomes. I sincerely feel that this “discovery” theoretically allows me to have 4 different tessellations for each geographically specific area.

That is definitely my next project, albeit one that will take 4 times as long to prepare & render, but I think it’s worth it. I’d love to see 4 different renderings of the exact same geographic area placed side by side!!! I wonder what location I’ll use? I want to make a rendering of DuPont Circle….hmmmm…..

I’m off google
|| 7/24/2005 || 12:29 pm || Comments Off on I’m off google || ||

Last week I wrote an e-mail to Google because someone from Google had decided to visit my website a couple weeks back and cached the page they visited, even when I requested them to not do so.

In response to my e-mail, Google has completely removed even the listing of my website from their database! Before when you’d google “Nikolas Schiller,” the first result would be a link to my website- without any text just “https://nikolasschiller.com,” and now (if you clicked the link above) it doesn’t display that anymore and the first result is the Washington Post article from July 4th, 2004 on the Adbusters website.

I guess I’m even harder to find now :-)
