Federal Triangle Quilt #2

Using this portion of Federal Triangle Quilt, I created this derivative map. I found myself counting up the total number of Freedom Plazas located with in the map. After spending a few minutes, I counted a total of 80 complete maps within my map– 48 in the map’s center, and 16 along the top and 16 along the bottom. I look forward to seeing this one printed out!

Around the time that I made the Google Earth layer featuring the map of 109 brothels within sight of the White House, I downloaded the imagery to make a few follow-up maps. Since the source aerial photography has such high spatial resolution (6 inches per pixel), the area shown in the map is quite limited. It features: the John A. Wilson Building (the DC City Hall), the Ronald Reagan Building & International Trade Center, the I.R.S. Building, Department of Commerce buildings, Old Post Office, and my favorite landmark, Freedom Plaza. And because Freedom Plaza is laid out in the form of a map of DC, this map actually contains numerous maps of DC (but how many?).

Due to my research related to Google’s censorship of downtown Washington, DC, I can claim that this map features newer imagery that one cannot see on the current version of Google Maps or Google Earth.

Using the elements from the Lenz Projection I was able to magnify portions of a tessellated Messier 101 Pinwheel Galaxy (a grand design galaxy) to create this fine celestial perspective.

It was originally rendered at the normal size (216mp), but I decided to cut the center out and use the circular Mandala layout. Being that its my first use of tessellated space I decided to use an archetype that represents rebirth.

Comparative Front Pages: Washington Post / Philadelphia Inquirer

Photograph of the Washington Post and Philadelphia Inquirer newspapers showing my map Jefferson Mandala

On March 26, 2007, the Philadelphia Inquirer published David Montgomery’s Here Be Dragons article. That morning I received a phone call from one of my best friends who happened to be in Philadelphia on business. He excitedly informed me that one of my maps was on the cover of a section in the Philadelphia Inquirer. I asked him to purchase as many copies as possible and about a month later I picked up the six copies from his house. My housemate let me borrow his camera to take an overhead photograph of the two newspaper articles side by side. When the housemate moved out a few months ago he gave me all of his photographs that he had on his computer and I found this photograph that I had forgotten about. What I found to be the most interesting aspect is the size of the map that was used in Philadelphia, the change of the article’s name, the movement from “Style” to “Health & Science.” I’ve tried to track down other syndications, but so far only the Philadelphia Inquirer has been obtained. The article itself has already been deaccessioned from the Philadelphia Inquirer’s website.

Ballwin Quilt #2

My memories of Christmas will always be defined by the time I spent growing up in the Burtonwood Manor Condominiums in Ballwin, Missouri. The map above is of the 1,500 foot radius around childhood bedroom on the second floor of 148 Apartment G, Cumberland Park Ct. I remember helping my mother move out of the apartment in 2003 and now only the memories remain. This Christmas I am hanging out in DC without the family, so today’s map is a reflection on times past. After looking at Google’s imagery and comparing it with my imagery and it’s meta-data, I believe mine imagery is slightly newer. I am basing my theory on the apartment’s rooftop coloring. In Google’s imagery the rooftops appear to be multiple colors, which indicates the installation of new roofing shingles. In the USGS imagery, all of the buildings around my former apartment have the same colored shingle, except my old apartment which is darker. This means that either my apartment was the first to be re-shingled or Google is using imagery that is older than April 2006.

Mount Holyoke Quilt

Located in South Hadley, Massachusetts, Mount Holyoke College is the first all woman’s school in the United States of America. Founded by Mary Lyon as Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, it’s served as a model for how most all women’s schools were formed. I visited the campus when I was a young teen because I was forced to travel with my sisters as they looked at universities to attend. I think I can probably map all of the Seven Sisters colleges in the area! Both of my sisters ended up attending Mount Holyoke College and I last visited it in 2000 at my sisters graduation. As for the map, the source aerial photography is a bit grainy, but it works [meta-data forthcoming]. I like the way the dodecagon came out and up next will be a diamond.
